Hi, new money here. Moving to Manhattan (life long dream to live there). What are the best schools?

A new money child will need IQ scores in the top 2-3% to get in, though, unless you are a celebrity. Cast a wide net to include Columbia Grammar, Berkeley Carroll, Brooklyn Friends, Riverdale Country, Little Red Schoolhouse/ ELizabeth Irwin etc.

Skip Birch Wathen Lenox.

The public magnets, like Hunter, Anderson, and Stuyvesant may be better schools in terms of peer group brainpower.

Interesting list. The wealthy social elite I know attend Brearley, Collegiate, Spence for girls, etc… as well. They would consider B and C at the top.

How do these schools screen "new money"? I'm contemplating applying for kid for 1st grade, and she's within top 1% based on IQ score. We have the money to afford tuition. Curious how these schools screen and whether we're potentially aiming to enter at a decent entry point.

Entering any of these highly sought after schools in an off year- such as first grade- is next to impossible unless you are an A list celebrity

You are too late to apply to private school for this year. And you need a NYC address to apply to Hunter.

Urban Baby was a website like this one for NYC. This question was asked many times there:

Top Tier: Trinity, Horace Mann, Dalton, Collegiate, Brearley, Chapin and Spence.

Next Tier: Fieldston, Riverdale, St. Ann's

Then there was a tier below.

This may not be exactly right.

Every guy I knew who went to Dalton or Trinity was a colloidal d—ck. Guys who went to Regis were universally great guys; Fieldston guys were all nice. Horace Mann mixed bag.

I think I’d move to Arkansas and send my kids to public school before sending them to Dalton or Trinity.

Hoo boy, you are in for a rude awakening, OP. The NY elite schools are not exactly open to out of towners and new money.

You'll go where you get in; I would not expect to have your pick. Being able to pay is not enough. The whole UES can pay, but not all of them get in.

If you're serious about aiming for the tippy top, you need to hire a admissions consultant. They will help you make the donations, connections, etc. you will need to have a chance.

First grade is going to be too late for some of the top schools. People go to feeder preschools to get in to the elite schools at K. After K, there may only be a couple spots a year until middle school. They will also not care AT ALL about IQ scores. Do not bring that up, you'll give yourself away.

They will know you're new money because you're not on any boards, you don't have people calling in for you, you didn't go to any of the elite schools yourself, etc. They will absolutely know, sorry.

Tina Fey was able to get her DDs into one of these schools partly due to rec letters from Lorne Michaels, whose daughter went to the same school. Similar story with Drew Barrymore’s DD’s. They’re Ari Kopelman’s granddaughters.

That’s what you’re up against OP

If you have that much money, just move to Greenwich for schools and the big family house and get an apartment in the city for fun.

It's all about multiple properties.

BWL is quite literally the school kids attend when they get kicked out of the other privs or can't handle the stress.

That Tina Fey needed rec letters for her kids at all is insane. She's TINA FREAKING FEY!

Avenues 100%, great education and college matriculation. Plus, socially there are more "new money" parents there.
