Peanut Allergies

Have you asked? Would your child have an allergic reaction if someone who touches a goldfish cracker were to touch him or her? If the answer is yes, the request is certainly reasonable.

Our daughter has multiple food allergies. Our allergist made a point to tell us that food allergies are covered by the Americans with Disabilities Act. Schools must accomodate children with food allergies. They do not need to be peanut or other allergen free, but they need provide an appropriate environment (i.e., at a minimum provide allergy free foods for your child or let you provide your own food). As other poster said, it also depends on the extent of your child's allergy. I would certainly discuss this with your pre-school and bring along a list of dairy free snack foods.

My son loves PB&J, too, and his preschool does not ban peanuts. However, I have never and will never pack him PB because I think that, if it were him with the peanut allergy, I would be glad a parent sent something else along instead. So he has PB&J on days he's not at school or for dinner.

Also, a friend of mine suggested sunflower seed butter as an alternative. For parents with kids of peanut allergies: is this OK? I'm sorry to be ignorant about the details; I don't know a lot about nut allergies, but I would like to try to use sunflower seed butter if kids with peanut allergies are not sensitive to it. TIA.

As it turns out, I overheard a mom say she was telling the school her kid was peanut allergic but they were not. She wanted to delay introducing peanuts to her little darling.

Did anyone else immediately make the connection between the mom who claimed a nonexistent peanut allergy and the parents who claim a religious exemption because they don't want to vaccinate?
