Ideal down payment on a 600k house?

True but you are going to lose money by parking everything into the house. You would be better off taking the interest deduction and using 600K in a savings account or stocks

Reston. And there are lots of houses in this area in the 600s that are a bit further out. Herndon, Ashburn, Sterling, Springfield and lots of other areas I can't look at because our jobs are in Reston.

Sorry, I meant to say if you can avoid the PMI that you can't get rid of later...like the FHA kind. PMI to start off with might be ok if you can get a great rate.

$120K - I wouldn't do more with these interest rates but I am of the camp that my money is better elsewhere when interest rates are this low.

Oh, so only wealthy (aka "desirable") areas are "DC area"? So you don't consider PG county, even on the border of the city, to be DC area?? This just gets better and better.
