It just seems like one more way to encourage helicopter parenting and to keep kids from exercising personal responsibility over their assignments and grades. I do realize it would be beneficial in some situations, and I hope parents find it useful. I'm just glad I won't have to deal with it.
I have a 7th and a 9th grader and we used SIS for the first time last year (for the then 8th grader) and I thought it was great! I don't consider myself a helicopter parent, but I do tend to stay on top of my kids as far as making sure they are doing what they need to do. In any event, I feel like SIS actually allows me to back off a bit from that approach. I find myself just monitoring grades to make sure they are acceptable and not constantly asking what homework they have and harassing them about working on upcoming projects, etc. - it gives them more independence to work at their own pace and manage their work on their own. I can give them space and yet still feel comfortable that their grades are fine.
