Try going south maybe? Fredericksburg is a sweet little town. Another vote for Charlottesville or Richmond, though I'm not sure how close to non-car-type things their train stations are.
To add on to this, the Charlottesville train station is about halfway between the Corner (UVA) and downtown - you'd probably want a car or cab.
