Where does Amtrak go from the Alexandria station?

Try going south maybe? Fredericksburg is a sweet little town. Another vote for Charlottesville or Richmond, though I'm not sure how close to non-car-type things their train stations are.


To add on to this, the Charlottesville train station is about halfway between the Corner (UVA) and downtown - you'd probably want a car or cab.

Williamsburg. AMTRAK is totally walkable to the historic district, hotels, etc. DD walked from train to dorm at W&M.

You can travel from Alexandria to Charleston and Savannah on the sleeper car. The train leaves around 8:00 pm and arrives in Charleston in the early morning. The rocking of the train put my dc to sleep right away when he was little.
