Will Schools Be Closed Tomorrow?

Cold weather will likely close MCPS Tues. Schools in states with the same arctic air we're about to get have closed. So, reasonable to expect we would too.

Those areas will have temps way, way below zero. Not even remotely comparable.

MCPS is ridiculous.

I had no idea that there were so many people in this area who are unable to accept reality. And no, I'm not referring to the people who think the schools should be closed if there is snow or ice or record cold.

We live in Frederick and just got a notice that car riders will be dismissed from the school cafe-gyma-torium on 1/7 due to the extreme weather. Sounds like they will not close due to the weather.

I'm saying that the reality is that the schools in this area close if there is snow or ice or record cold.

It would be ABSURD for MCPS to close tmrw.

I really hope MCPS closes tomorrow.

Me too! I am a WOHM and I love having a day with the kids.

If it closes tomorrow, for HS students that is another review day lost. My son doesn't have his review packets for certain key classes because of no school last Friday (and they are not online).

I really hope MCPS DOESN'T close tomorrow.

The inability (refusal really) of this region to handle any weather of any kind is completely exasperating.

Agree that it is the reality.

Believe that it is absurd.

My son had the belief, at 3yo, that snow on the ground meant per se no school/daycare. I hate that. I hate that we are raising a generation with the belief that they cannot deal with a little snow, ice, or cold. That they must cancel everything and huddle at home. Is this how we want them to live?

I have to come to accept that our kids' schools will close when there is even the hint of possible snow or ice in towns 45 minutes from here, where I've never been. Not thrilled about it, but okay that's the price of being in a geographically large county (where lots of lawyers happen to live) = the administration has to be overly cautious about the possibilities of driving accident.

What I don't understand is the advocacy to close schools where there is no obvious risk. There is no precipitation, so the ice issue is moot. Yes, tomorrow will be unusually cold here, but not so cold that life as we know it will cease. I don't understand the rationale that shops/offices/every other form of human activity tomorrow will remain open but somehow schools should not. And btw my child walks to school.

omg
boo hoo

They will adjust the schedule if absolutely necessary.

But if your son is banking on having those review packets to help him pass, then he really didn't learn much over the semester now, did he???

Why so nasty? High school final exams are serious business. They will not adjust the schedule - the students will have to muddle through.

My son has learning disabilities. He works very hard for average results. He needs all the time and resources available to him.

Some people are just nasty, no need to engage with them. Losing HS review is important and there is not an easy way to make up days before exams. For MCPS, I think one thing they need to remind themselves of next year is closing in early December due to the threat of snow, makes it more difficult to close when actually necessary in Jan./Feb. If the predictions are correct, tomorrow is likely to be the coldest day in 20 years in this area, and some ares could certainly be icy. The other thing MCPS should consider is whether it really is necessary to close all schools because some of the more remote are treacherous. Maybe a delay will be in order but the real problem is often the premature closings early in the year.
