He's 42.5 lbs.

If he is 95%+ doesn't that by definition make him bigger than average?

Yes. At the 95th percentile, only 5% of boys his age are bigger. He is bigger than 94% of all boys his age. The average sized boy is one that is at the 50th percentile.

I could have written this exact post, OP. My son is 7.5 and weighs 45.5 lbs. He just had a physical and I mentioned my concern that he is too skinny and the pediatrician was not worried. He is 12% for height and weight. His twin brother weighs about 4 lbs more and is 27% and 34% for H and W. The bigger twin does eat a little bit more. Both are very active. I am trying to get them both to eat more. They eat normally - 3 square meals and 2 snacks a day, but the skinnier twin loves veggies more than protein and will eat less protein than his brother. My kids do look skinny to me at swimming lessons compared to the other kids, but there are a few other skinny ones there, too.

percentiles are meaningless too. some people are short and/or thin.

OP, if you're concerned that he's not eating enough or that he's lethargic/sluggish, talk to your pediatrician.

my 3.5 year old weighs 38 lbs (95th percentile). My 20 month old weighs 19 lbs (under 5th percentile). She often eats more at a meal than he does. I try to get good nutrition in, but as long as she's growing (even if slowly) I try not to stress too much.

My almost 7 year old is 46 pounds. About 40th percentile. And he's 75th percentile for height. He's lean, but not emancipated. As long as there is some growth in both height and weight, I don't think it matters too much.

What does your pediatrician say?

My 7 year old DD is under 40 pounds; her 4 year old brother is over 40 pounds. My DD recently had the stomach flu, and the next day, her favorite shorts were too big on her. But she is just fine. I've heard of other people with kids my DD's age giving them protein shakes, and taking other measures to make their kids eat more, but my DD's opinion is that my DD is petite and more food will make her fat, not bigger. So if your DS is in good shape, eats nutricious meals, and is growing at a decent pace -- his pace, but consistently, then why worry? There has to be someone at the bottom and at the top of the growth chart. And, yes, while not asked, I still keep my DD in a 5-point harness, even though she is 7.

I wouldn't worry at all. My 6 year old is tall and skinny - 80% percentile for height, 10% for weight. Doctor wasn't concerned at all. Most of the kids who are dramatically bigger than him either just have an obviously different physique or are overweight.

At this age, just trust your child's appetite.
