Consider CRPS or fibromyalgia.

I had horrible hip pain radiating to upper thigh when I had a herniated disc in my lower back. It showed up on an MRI of my spine. Cleared up with 6 weeks of PT.

OP, we can all guess at different syndromes and problems that your mother may be having but an internist or family doctor is not prepared to cope with this. She should go to a major medical center or major clinic (I'm talking about something like the Cleveland Clinic, not the Minute Clinic) that has a pain center in which a team approach can be taken where her case is worked up by different specialists. I would start with Johns Hopkins possibly.

If it were me I would go first to see a neurosurgeon with my MRI films to Georgetown. Then if they did not see anything wrong with the spine then if that is not the case they can lead you in the right direction. My money is on a disc/nerve issue and the neurosurgeons at Georgetown are the best and they can figure it out. That way you are not on a wild goose chase looking for different specialists. Start there and good luck!
