got a full in store credit refund for my 2007 leather Kramfors from IKEA today PSA

I am also impressed that you were able to take it back. I don't think it's cheap...there was a warranty and the product didn't hold up well. I would do the same thing.

My big pet peeve is people who return well worn stuff to LLBean and expect a replacement. Some guy returned a briefcase when I was there recently because the handle was coming off. He even said he had had it a long time. That is lame!

You go girl!!! Thanks for sharing.

Huh...we have the same couch and it's been the opposite, it's held up fabulously save for some cat scratch action and a pocket-knife-in-the-back-pocket-while-sitting incident (which only cost $20 to repair, thank goodness).

And we've had ours at least 6 years, and it's moved 3 times. And whatever your kids did to yours, ours probably did worse (we have 2 boys under 5).

So I think Ikea's warranty is spot on, perhaps you got a bad batch or their production went downhill at a certain point. And it's really good to know that for the products that they DO warranty, that they'll honor it.

Great job, OP. The number of people seeing positive discussion about IKEA on this thread more than justifies the cost of replacement for IKEA. A win for all involved. That's precisely why some companies offer long term warranties on their products.

Thanks for sharing this.

I actually have two of these sofas, and on one of them the leather has completely fallen apart. It looks like a layer of plastic is peeling off the leather. When you sit in it, the dye come off on your clothes. The other one for some reason is just fine. I'm glad to hear about your refund---this sofa ought to have lasted longer given its price and warranty. Returning a clearly defective item is by no means cheap

Talked to them today after reading this blog and same thing full store credit they said! They will even pick up the sofa so you don't have to haul it to the store yourself! I thought I was stuck with this $2000 piece of crap, but IKEA really stepped it up! It's not a scam to return a defective product they have had many issues with this leather couch it's supposed to last way more than 10 years that's why they have a warranty. Mine started to fall apart after one year, no joke, I called they told me that the frame was the only thing covered so they could do nothing all these years i thought I was just stuck, so I duct taped it so i could use it! I paid over 2000 for the item. The dumb dumb that thinks its a scam to return it didn't pay a couple of grand for a sofa that started to fall apart after a year!!! They know it was defective that's why they are returning it with such ease, I don't even have my receipt. Thanks IKEA! YOU KNOW IT'S NOT A SCAM!

Great OP!

I think a sofa should definitely last for more than 3 years. And they offer a warranty for a reason!

Called them today, sent photos of it in poor condition and they issued a full store credit - 1700+ to re decorate. They had advertised it as being good for kids justifying the higher cost and no longer carry it because of the complaints....just wanted to share just in case anyone else has one and is dissatisfied.

Very cool. My Ikea couch (ektorp sectional) has held up very well over the past four years. Last year, one of the cushion covers started to unravel, the piping just popped out. I took it back, hoping that I'd be able to purchase a replacement cushion and they just gave me a whole new slipcover set and told me that if they gave me one new cushion cover, the set would not look matched anymore and that it would be better if I replaced it all. And they didn't charge me at all!

OP, I am so glad you posted this! I have three leather Kramfors pieces that have worn HORRIBLY. I have been trying to find my receipt, because we are inside the 10 year warranty - in fact, we were waiting for the Ikea to open in Denver, CO because we moved away from the state (and Ikea) we bought it at. Unfortunately, in our move, I think we misplaced the receipt. The woman on the customer service line I called said we could try bringing the cover to the store manager here, and it would be up to their discretion whether they would do anything for us or not, without a receipt. Wish me luck!

Op here: Actually I have three kids and two dogs. I have a 14 year old boy, an almost 3 year old and a 10 month old. Younger ones came after the sofa of course and yes by then it was falling apart. Stitches coming out, leather looking like it was "shedding" - just not good. Much like a PP described. Sofa was marketed for families with kids and pets. Seemed a perfect match. Until it wasn't!!
And hey I am so glad to hear other people are taking advantage of this. We now have a new Ikea sofa bed and ottoman and are thrilled. They kept us as customers and we have spread the word that they are a good company that honors their warranties. Happiness all around.

In the warranty is states it doesn't cover the fixed leather - how did you get around that? My leather looks terrible and i take very good care of it, cleaning regularly as directed.

Awesome, OP!

I disagree when ppl say you scammed Ikea. If they didn't want to give you a credit, they wouldn't have... not like you can MAKE them do it.

Nice to see a company standing by their warranty.

peppers don't have a warranty. Not the same thing.

I have the same couch and have had the same issues - ripping, tearing at the seams, and the leather is wearing off and sticks to clothes and stains them. I am a single female and the couch does not get much use, nor has it ever been abused. It's a solid piece, and it's beautiful, but the leather is of poor quality. IKEA replaced the chaise cover for free when it had a tear, but now the other couch is simply falling apart. I've had it for 6 years, and I'm using my 10 year warranty to return it. Please wish me luck.
