Why does my DH's breath stink after he's been on the toilet for a while

Very common if he reads while on the can ....and dips.

Is he really flexible?

He's in the bathroom by himself for nearly 2 hours a day and when he emerges, his breath smells like tobacco. Does his breath ever smell that way any other time? If not, I agree with those who suggest that he's in there chewing.

OP here - thanks for the responses. My DH has ALWAYS spent a lot of time on the toilet. He literally has to go about 20 minutes after every meal. If he doesn't, he 'claims' discomfort and he's a real freakin baby when it comes to any kind of personal discomfort (I hate to imagine the drama if he had menstrual cramps :roll. And, I agree that it shouldn't take 15 minutes every time he goes but he LIKES sitting on the toilet. He's always got something to do when he goes. And, I have gotten pissed at the amount of time he spends luxuriating on the toilet. Believe me, I have strategies for dealing with it. In his defense, he doesn't mind me assigning him tasks and he's accepted me banning certain items - he can't take his smart phone in there or the computer, I've banned him doing any kind of project while in there (like sharpening the knives, learning to tie knots, etc.). I'm not making this up! It's totally a 'man cave' and even the kids have started referring to it as such. I've NEVER heard of anyone enjoying time on the toilet so much but I guess it is the one place in the house where he can pretty much have all the privacy, peace and quiet he wants. NO ONE wants to go to the basement when he's in his man cave because of the smell (he will do a courtesy flush upon request). After 15 years and 3 kids together, we've learned how to accomodate his need/desire for his toilet time - and he'll accept me setting the timer to limit the length of his visit to his man cave when the situation warrants it .

I've looked for cans of tobacco and other contraband but haven't found anything. DH is pretty lousy at hiding things and I'm pretty good at finding them. Still, I haven't ruled out the possiblity of chew. It just that in the past when he's done this sort of thing (chewing/smoking), he's never been able to limit it to his time in the bathroom. His bowel habits may be regimented but his addictions never were and the only time I smell it is when he's been in the bathroom - and even when we've been on trips and there's no possibility of hiding the cans from me. He's also not good at cleaning up after himself, he's not a swallower and I'm pretty confident that I would have found evidence of spit by now.

I'll suggest to DH that he follow up with a medical provider to run some general tests. He could definitely use a work up. Thanks for your thoughts, everyone!

My DH is one of those guys who loves spending time in the toilet doing his 'business'. I find it annoying sometimes because he can literally spent 45 mintues sitting on the toilet - three times a day! Luckily, we've got a downstairs bathroom that he uses - uses so much that even the kids have started to refer to it as his 'man cave'.

For the past year or so, I can always tell he's been down to do his business because his breath smells. It smells like chewing tobacco. I, of course, asked him if he were chewing and denied it. I didn't believe him but we recently got additional life insurance policies and he tested negative for tobacco. I'm still not convinced he's not chewing but I've found no other evidence of it and when we've been on vacation, etc., I've also smelled it. A few years ago, he cut out all carbs and he experienced ketosis, his breath was horrible. But, while I don't find this smell pleasant, it's not horrible. It smells like chew.

So, is he secretly chewing? Any ideas what might be causing it if it's not chew?

I've not read other posts, so don't know if this has been asked. Does he drink more than a cup of coffee a day? If so, how much coffee. If so, look up coffee drinking and fecal matter breath. My DH stopped drinking coffee when he found this data about how the breath of coffee drinkers smells, even when teeth are brushed.

I am thinking that if he figured how to turn a basement bathroom into a man cave you aren't giving him enough credit. He is chewing tobacco down there and hiding it. Pretty common for tobacco users to be sneaky if they know someone isn't going to approve.

He is good. Very good me thinks.

His response -- "my guess is that he's not actually on the can; he's just sitting in there, chewing tobacco."

My husband says the same. And masterbating.

OP here - my DH confessed. He HAS been chewing tobacco in the bathroom. Based on the responses I got here, I suspected I needed to do change my search methods. And, I did find the evidence. RAther than confront him, I told him that I was really worried that there was something going on health wise and that I was going to schedule an appointment for him with the gastroenterologist - and I would be going with him to the appointment. Then, I asked him again, 'are you sure you don't know why your breath stinks?'. He then confessed. I didn't go off on him but I did express my disappointment that despite my repeated comments and questions, he continued to lie about it - and it's not the first time he's done it about stuff like this. What's the big freakin deal? I don't like him smoking/chewing but it's not like we argue over it. I get more pissed about all the time he spends in the bathroom! He knows he shouldn't smoke/chew so I don't need to beat up on him about it. I don't get it. Why lie in the first place?

This thread makes me happy because we so rarely get resolution or followup from posters. I'm glad he wasn't eating his own poop.

It is addictive. How long has he use the stuff.

He'll keep hiding it. It's part of the fun. Mommy caught him...

I'm going to stop reading DCUM today because that comment just cracked me up so badly that I don't want anything else to get in the way of this memory...
