How often do you color your hair (to cover grey)?

How do you mix your own color? I would love to learn how to do this. I have gray roots after 10 days. Do I go to a beauty supply shop and ask. Is it better than the box you can buy at the grocery store or Target? I have dark brown hair with 75% gray and I am only 42.

I'm so glad to read that people color more frequently than every 6 weeks since my roots start showing after a week, and I have dark hair with 50% gray; definitely noticible. I thought coloring more often would be damaging, but from these responses maybe I was wrong on that count. To anyone who colors at home and a salon, how do you match the colors? To pp 23:23, would you mind sharing where you got the root bottle?

I'm 48 (was brunette) and color every two weeks. My hair grows fast and I feel like shit if I see any gray. I even use a color hair mascara for around the face. I think facial cleansers strip the color when I wash my face. It is expensive but my stylist gives me a discount since I go so often. I feel so good when I get it done! I will color my hair until I die!

Every time I dye at home I make an insane mess -- black dye is hard to deal with -- but I just can't pay $90 every 4 weeks in a salon.

I go to one of the cheaper salons (PR Partners) where color is $50. Used to do it at home but it looks so much better when I get it done int he salon. Was way too dark at home.

Every 12 weeks.

Every five weeks at a salon. I would love to let it go gray but I worry about ageism in the workplace. As soon as I retire, it's gray all the way for me!

Wow, I am getting grayer, have not dyed my hair, but this gives me pause about how often I might have to do it if I were to dye it.

Are the drugstore dyes more or less damaging to the hair than the salon dyes?

wow

talk about a controlling ass

Mine doesn't care, and I'm mostly gray.

I do mine at home with semi-permanent Herba Shine color every 4 weeks, hair grows insanely fast and I'm almost all gray.

Not the PP quotes, but I've been mixing my own for 10 years. Go to the beauty supply store and ask someone to help. They can recommend the correct shade and developer and explain how much to mix just for root touch ups. It's better on your hair not to do overall color each time and you'll save money only using a quarter to half a bottle of the dye each time.

I am about 80% grey. I colour my hair every 4 weeks, and do my roots every two weeks. My hair grows really fast.

I use Clairol Soy (at Sallys), 6N. I only color my part areas once every 7-9 days and once a week around my face(mix very little color and solution and apply with a q-tip). I color all roots every other week. I also color my eyebrows!

I see gray roots around my temples after 5 days. I use Clairol Root Touch-up to delay my visits to the salon, which are 4-5 weeks.

To the PP who mixes her own color -- how do you do it? I am staring to notice a substantial change in the texture of my hair now that I color so frequently (I am 40 and have been coloring since I was 28.) Recently it has become incredibly dry and fly away. I am wondering if I'd be better off mixing my salon's color, Goldwell, at home or could it be the Goldwell?
