name poll: Ryan or Lucas for baby boy.

I like both of them but I would pick Ryan, mostly just because Lucas/Luke seems like it's more popular right now. Also, I have known a couple really nice guys named Ryan, so I have a good association with that name.

Ryan, definitely. I can't stand Lucas, although Luke is fine.

I LOVE Ryan and it was on our short list. However, we did not choose it for the same reason other PP's have stated: it's become a rather unisex name lately. Same with our other choice, Cameron. We decided that it would be tougher for a boy to be stuck with the same name as a girl in his class than it would be if a girl had the same name as a boy. Hence, we chose a boy name that (hopefully) has no chance of becoming a girl name anytime soon; although you never can tell.

Where I grew up Ryan was a very low class name. Still is. I much prefer Lucas.

OP here: There are tons of Alex girls and boys (Alex for Alexandra or Alexander). and tons of Sams boy or girl (samantha or Samuel). that doesnt bother me so much. i think Ryan as a girl is in the VAST VAST minority (I have never heard of one or met one, unless I am living in a bubble?).

Ireland. Are you serious that you don't understand what that means? It was a too common choice particularly among people with low socio economic status about 20 years ago. Hence negative associations. Perhaps that still isnt' clear enough!

Interesting re: Ireland and socio economic stuff. I like Ryan- I think it's less popular than Lucas these days, which seems to be climbing astronomically (I know 3 baby Lucas).

I like Ryan and Luke. Ryan is not a girl's name. A girl named Ryan is a girl with a boy's name.

Dont like Lucas. Love Ryan.

Ryan = frat boy

Lucas rhymes with mucus

We know a woman named Ryan but she is 31 years old. Her family just went for it. She's really nice. I love the name Ryan, but for a boy. Hate the name Lucas and Luke. Just gives me a bad feeling. Not sure why, but I just think they're awful. Good luck.

I actually know two girls named Ryan and one named "Ryann" (with the Ann prounounced as it sounds).

I know two girls named Cameron (not counting Cameron Diaz!) and one named Camryn.

And, finally, I've heard several Haydens lately - all girls. Maybe it's just where I live (western Fairfax County), but it seems a lot of girls are receiving boy names. Once that happens, it automatically gets turned into a girl name, because, really, what little boy wants to be accused of having the same name as a girl (hence, no more male Leslies, Ashleys, and Carols!)

Just to add, you could say the same about the names Riley and Reagan (and maybe Rory). Used to be considered boy names, now they appear to be predominantly girl names.
