Subbing is a good idea...but try to get a long-term sub position (for someone out on maternity leave, for example). That will give you the best sense of what it'll really be like.

I teach middle school English and reading. The job market is hard right now, not impossible, but hard to get in to.

Just wanted to chime in that my husband practiced law for many years before going back to school and getting his M.Ed. in his 30s. He teaches for DCPS (middle school) and loves it.

The hours are no less than when he worked for a large firm and the pay hardly comparable. But he is so happy and he is phenomenal at his job.
