Possible Cheating on DCPS Standardized Tests

Anonymous
I know the person who has been working for years to get this story out. It isn't that one media outlet or another didn't work to get the story because it was being handed to them. If you spend any time with the kids at Noyes you will immediately know that the test scores are not imbued with veracity. But Noyes is not isolated and the problem has been going for more than a decade.

Some 2010 highlights from some of our favorite schools:

Ludlow-Taylor 2 classes flagged for high erasure rates of 6 tested

West - 4 out of 12 classes tested

Barnard 2 out of of 8 classes tested

Marie Reed 2 out of 10 classes tested.

J.O. Wilson in Ward 6 and now feeding in to Stuart Hobson:

In 2010 10 out of 10 classrooms flagged for erasures.

Let the investigation start right there.

21:32, what happened to TEAM is an excellent question. The page on the DCPS website only includes schools awarded in 2007-8 and 2008-9.

The schools awarded based 2008 CAS gains and classes flagged for irregular erasures include:

Aiton 12/18
Hearst 2/2
Raymond 7/12
Thomas 2/8
Winston 17/20

The two others were Mamie Lee and Sharpe Health Schools. I believe these schools give a lot of portfolio tests? Regardless, they were not flagged.

The schools that had big bumps in 2007 test scores and received awards were:

Barnard 6/12
Noyes 6/8
Tyler 2/8

The paper didn't mention if they analyzed the 2007 erasures, but I put the 2008 irregularities after the names above.

In case you don't recall, this program provided cash to schools that raised DCCAS scores. $10K for principals, $8K for teachers and even $2k for custodians.

I want my money back.

So if I look up who got "autonomous" status, any bets on if I find any school (outside of Ward 3) that wasn't cheating?

In case you didn't notice, Hearst is in Ward 3. And probably has a problem with cheating.

Is it too late to apply for:

Cap City
Haynes
Two Rivers
Stokes

I did notice Hearst erasure problems. That's why I listed them. Despite only testing 2 classrooms of children someone felt a need to cheat at Hearst. Unreal.

Autonomous status is something awarded for (yes) high test scores, leadership and some other crap that I don't feel like typing up.

The autonomous schools listed on the DCPS website include the Barnard and Noyes (fans of the pink pearl eraser) and Banneker and Key.

This principal is now an Instructional Superintendent and does one look at those schools under his watch with more scrutiny?

Hilarious!

Desperate HD Cooke parents cling to the possibility of their school improving academically merely because they have a new building.

In the meantime, Noyes, which has been an academic "superstar" blowing the doors off of its downscale competitors has just been revealed to be a fraud.

Gee, what are the odds that every other low-value DCPS is a total fraud, too?

Good news: Still not too late to apply to Haynes, Appletree, Bridges, and Stokes!

Good luck!

Actually what is scarier is that these kids have been told that they were performing at grade level. Anyone that looks at that test knows it is the minimum of what a kids should know. Testing or no, it just scares me that there are so many kids failing the basics.

All of you gloating in charters should be careful this cheating can happen anywhere. There are not enough slots at any of the good schools and the rest of us are screwed.

I can't take credit for this, but someone on Twitter suggested that Rhee was participating in "Erase to the Top".

My child is listed at one of the charters above, and while yes, those are great schools, the attitude and "CHARTERS RULE" mentality of this post is super obnoxious. I am rooting for all DC schools and find the people who try to smack down parents like those trying to improve HD Cooke as rude and really, really annoying.

Good fucking grief, folks. I agree with 10:50 (and am not a Cooke parent, either). We all just want a good education for our little ones. Maybe you've got your kid(s) at one of the "magnificent 7" charters. Maybe you're a big booster for your currently low-performing neighborhood DCPS (which may or may not have a new building and/or an new principal). Maybe you're IB for a high-performing DCPS (or lucky enough to get in OOB). We all make choices based on what we think is best and what the lottery gods/goddesses bestow upon us.

I think it's fine to challenge people's assumptions, to ask provocative questions, etc. And, you may even feel contempt for people making choices different than your own. You may think they're completely and utterly misguided, deluded, or foolish. You may have a comment about their choices that you think is ever so witty and clever. Just 'cause it sounds funny in your own head (and/or in a group of like-minded parents) doesn't mean you need to say it, even in an anonymous online forum. And I freely admit, I've found some of the snarkier comments wiity and amusing myself...until I think about the person(s) at whom their aimed. Seriously, think before you type.
