Smoking question

Hey . . . don't attack the smoker!! I have a legit anthropological interest in some of these behaviors. I find if fascinating.

So 10:56 - you open your car windows because you believed the extra ventilation would somehow reduce the risk of the smoke?? If you were really worried about the risk of the smoke though, you wouldn't be smoking in the first place.

If there is no ashtray/trashcan then I will put it on the ground, because if you put it in the can (even if wet) it can reignite paper.

It is health 101, don't fill your lungs with smoke....

No, not because I thought it reduced my risk to smoke. I did it because it gets foggy if you fill your car up with smoke and it makes your eyes water. And yes, it does reduce the amount that you smell like smoke. Maybe not completely, but there is a difference.

I don't smoke in my car.

I love how people attack smokers, these are the same people who eat fast food twice a week, or drink a bottle of wine with dinner -yet they tell me not to smoke my one ciggarette a week.

Whatever people - we're all going to be ash in the ground one day

No, there is no difference. You smoke in a car with the windows open, you and the car still smell strongly of smoke. You smoke outside, you still smell of smoke. You can delude yourself into thinking you don't reek all you want, but you do.

Smoking is gross, there's no way around it. Dropping your butts on the ground is gross and littering. Yes, I judge smokers harshly, but there is absolutely no reason at all why anyone should smoke, ever.

I'm sure you recycle everything Miss Perfect. And you bike to work? Would you like to compare environmental footprints? Let's go -

What do you drive?

What kind of diapers do you use? It should be against the law to use anything but cloth diapers because it takes centuries for the disposable to disinigrate in landfills.

I do not smoke and I do like to smell tobacco products. However, adults have the right to decide for themselves whether they wish to smoke. You want your rights protected then you have to protect the rights of everyone else. You judge smokers harshly? I would judge you far more harshly because you judge smokers so harshly. Tobacco is addictive and it is a difficult habit to quit. Why don't you try a little compassion because from the way you sound, you need people to be compassionate with you. ion.

Blah blah blah. People have the right to smoke, and I have the right to judge those who do. And you have the right to judge me. But there is NO REASON why anyone should smoke, if you are addicted, you shouldn't have started in the first place. Nothing at all will change how I feel about that, it's stupid to start, and it's stupid to continue. Sure, quitting's hard, maybe smokers should have thought of that in the first place. And dropping cigarette butts on the ground apparently kills birds, but it's also just plain antisocial to litter at all. If there's nowhere else to dispose of your cigarette butt, don't light up in the first place.

OP here - Hey angry lady, stop with the bashing. Seriously. I was curious about these behaviors because I couldn't understand the logic behind them - the smokers here explained their thought process to me.

Your anger is probably at least as harmful to your health as their smoking.

Amen to that, 15:00.

Anonymous wrote:OP here again. I never thought of the fire hazard. So even if people disagree with you, at least there is a reason for the behavior that really did seem just bizarre to me.

If you are in your car though, why not toss the butt into a cup or ashtray? That would prevent the fire and eliminate the litering.

I used to smoke in my stupidity of youth and there is a difference between smoking and sealing yourself up in a box without ventilation. I never smoked in the car without opening a window. I also never used my ash tray in my car because its impossible to clean.

So you drive with the windows down even during winter? Don't you have heat/AC in your car?

If you like to smoke just keep it for yourself. I hate to drive and have to smell the smoke coming from the car next to me.

Not "angry lady" here, but get real OP. You asked a question about what is a legitimately annoying, even anger-inducing, habit.

I don't care what your reasons, there is no excuse for dumping your cigarettes on the ground. Fire hazard? Spit on it, quench it, drop the tip.

And flicking cigarettes from the car because you don't want to get your ashtray dirty? Oh god that alone makes me angry. It is completely self-absorbed and harmful behavior. People do this with food trash, too. Don't want to get their cars dirty, so they leave their wrappers etc. by the side of the car in a parking lot then drive away.

Cigarettes or trash, it pisses me off that some people think it is okay to trash the environment because they are too lazy to walk to a trashcan or expect someone else to clean it up.

I don't give a crap if smokers smoke, as long as it doesn't affect me. But if I have to wade past a toxic cloud to get to my classroom, or look at lipstick stained disgusting butts all over the ground, or have one hit my car and spark as I'm minding my own business, anger is an appropriate response.

So OP--stop trying to dictate how people respond. And your little throwaway line about anger more harmful than smoking? Laughable on its face, both in content and purpose.

15:20, I'm sending a giant air-five your way (I'm 15:00). You said very eloquently all that I would have loved to have said.

You are spot on. I did. I asked a question about a disgusting, annoying, dirty habit because I see it every single day and I wanted to know how smokers justified this to themselves. So . . . I asked a smoker.

A smoker responded.

Two people having a civil conversation until you jumped in with your judgy-wudgy meanness. You weren't invited to this conversation. You are interrupting and being rude. If you were my child, I'd send you to your room so you could learn some manners.

Rude social behvior such as what you are exhibiting is AT LEAST as disgusting as smoking. More even, because smokers can quit, but you'll always be a mean person.
