Thank you all! OP here. I'll try hot dogs today.
Yesterday was better but we were at a park watching my kid in a game so it was more stop-and-go and I didn't really have a destination other than to practice, so that helped. I think, maybe I am making this up, but I think maybe she also just preferred being on grass and was more amenable because of it. Could that be a thing? Her paws are so soft and perfectly pink. I wonder if she just doesn't have experience with pavement and the feel is odd and new? Re: following the dogs, this has always been my trick and seems like a superpower but isn't enough in and of itself yet. I am looking up what you all suggested and will work with better treats today. Appreciate the help! |
Your dog could have anxiety. Maybe talk to a vet behaviorist at the shelter? |
OP, do you use the treat before the refusal to walk or only after? I'd do the former and use high value treats like pieces of hotdog. |
Gentle Leader. It attached to snout instead of neck. Turn head instead of neck, prevents the instinctive defense reaction. |
My dog hates the gentle leader. Just fyi |
string cheese is a great, high-value treat to my dog, and easier to wrangle than hot dog bits
Say "with me" and show the treat. If the dog moves with you, reward w/ treat. Practice inside, then in one specific spot outside, and gradually expand familiar territory |
