Is there something wrong with people now that they can’t mow their grass?

I don't make $60/hour, but I also don't have the equipment.

You can buy a new edger at a home equipment store for $100-300, depending in part on quality. You can rent from a tool rental place for much less, or buy used for much less. Might be able to find something on a buy nothing listserve.

If it's not worth it for you to do yourself to save the money long term, it's unlikely to be worth it to someone else to come do it for you for the same amount of money.

OP, you can try Lawnstarter.com and see if they will service your area. They are around $45 a week. The amount varies with your mowing schedule. Local lawn crews do the mowing, edging, and blowing. I used them last year for the season and I am using them this year. I'm in Moco. My lawn won't win any awards, but it is neat and trim.

Time is money.

$130/week in Bethesda. Older property. Not one of the enormous lots.

This includes weeding the beds, I think.

We bought a push mower during Covid and starting doing it ourselves. Our lot is .3 acre. It looks better now because the huge zero turn riding mowers the pros use tore the grass up.

I bought a mower at Costco and pay myself the peace of mind of doing it correctly when it’s needed.

People have days off.

Then I guess it’s time for you to go to Home Depot and spend $200-$300 on a cheap gas lawnmower and start mowing your own lawn like a grown up adult. A 7,000 sq ft lot is 70x100 feet. Assuming probably 1,200 sq ft of it is house foundation, plus another 800 sq ft for a patio/deck and/or driveway. That leaves potentially around 5,000 sq ft of grass to mow. I think you can suffer through that for $120+ savings each time.

Our lot is slightly larger than yours and I’ve been mowing it for 12 years now with the same MTD 21” gas mower we bought when we moved here. Assuming I probably mow 20 times a year on average , that’s $24,000 I saved and spent on other, better things than paying some dude to cut it for me.

And if you don’t earn more than $60/hr and are living in DC, then you need all the savings opportunities you can get, because you are housepoor AF.

Oh really?

You clearly never run a business. The only people with “days off” are employees.

No, it’s laziness.

Yes. It’s the outsource-entitlement mentality so common to most millennials. The same attitude that prevents them from changing a flat tire or replacing a car battery, fixing a leaky flapper valve in a toilet, and a myriad of other common household tasks that people used to just handle themselves.

We are rapidly becoming a country full of people who can’t do sh!t for themselves.

No, millennials just learned about comparative advantage. Just because I can do it, doesn’t mean there’s not tremendous value in paying someone who can do it in a fraction of the time at scale, freeing my time up to do something that makes me money or that I am more skilled at or benefits my family.

I’m in Rockville and it seems like every company requires a contract for the season at $40 a week for our 1/3 acre lot. Sometimes they skip a week and they might just do edging or something. Sometimes depending on rain/heat they might come every 10 days. The price is fixed either way.

Nope. I make too much money to waste time on mowing laws with I can pay someone 35 bucks to do it and maintain all the equipment.

Less time with kids and wife.

Also - mowing a lawn isn’t exercise. It is breathing in lots of gas exhaust and dust.
