If you have a child who is active with sports & activities, then phones are needed before age 14 for safety reasons. My daughter is in 7th at SR and pretty much the entire class has phones. At this age, they are dropped off for sports, school events, dances, etc and a phone is essential to stay in contact.

kids didn’t have phones when we grew up. It’s not ‘essential’

+1 for Applewatch, though the vast majority of kids at our child's private school have phones by 7th grade. We wanted a device so our child could call, text, and/or we could locate if running behind or plans change and she needs to stay after school. She walks home from school alone most days and has a sprawling campus, plus has ECs that sometimes run late. On occasion she will text to see if a friend can come over after school . We use the watch to occasionally track where the bus is to help us gauge when to do pick up after sporting events.

Some of my child's friends have flip phones, and they seem to be doing fine as they have call and texting features for communication purposes.

Our School does not recommend smartphone til 8th grade and has a no phone policy during school hours but still a lot of kids have them in 6th grade. Holding the line until 8th grade is not easy but we are doing it, much to our child's chagrin. Once they get a device, ground rules, limits and consequences need to be consistent and enforced.

If you have a designated pick up spot etc, it may be feasible. By 7th/8th grade, I expect my kid to running her social life. I support with logistics but I am
largely out of scheduling.

So much data supporting the negatives of phone use and social media. If your kid needs a phone to be picked up for sports, get them a flip phone. I actually don’t think they need a phone.

Omg phones didn’t start the issue and taking them away won’t solve the issue. The kids still have access to chats via chrimebooks/ipads/Apple Watches/even word documents shared through Google drive. The kids will bully using whatever method is available, as kids always have. Stop blaming the phones. And OP hasn’t returned stating what kind of social media is being used. 4th grades shouldn’t be using snap chat, instagram, etc, but the chat function has become a staple and there’s no getting rid of it.

We’ve found the Apple Watch adequate - no need for a phone

My kid gets dropped off for things without either a phone or an Apple Watch. Occasionally it would be easier to find her at pick-up for one or the other, but I've not found it "essential" (as PP said). We'll get a starter phone or Apple Watch eventually for this reason, but you can do without.

Everything I hear about this school is horrible - cliquish, mean girls, horrible moms, bullying boys. So disgusting. Am nervous about my sweet daughter starting at Visi next year.

Children have always had intermittent access to P---boy mags and the classical art section of the library, so preventing them from being on On--Fa-- and P---hub 24x7 won't solve that issue, either.
