We should definitely take the advice of someone who thinks Costa Rica is an island.

My sister chose not to vaccinate her kids before our family trip, Her pediatrician sent her with antibiotics just in case. My pediatrician recommended following the CDC. No one got sick...but to me it falls under the I still wear a seat belt even though I have never been in a car accident category.

Official vaccination guidelines are BASED UPON WHAT THEY ARE SEEING ON THE GROUND (for that season and the activities/accommodations you have planned). Ignore them at your own risk. What did or did not happen to someone else, at another time or in another part of the country is totally irrelevant.

Why would you want to risk ruining your vacation or being sick for months after you return. People are idiots, really.

I went in the month of Feb and don't recall mosquitos; I do recall giant flying cockroaches and other huge flying critter bugs and cicadas.

PP. I could hear them flying and crashing into my screened in room all night long.

I use Capitol Travel Medicine and take their advice. Better to get actual medical advice than ask the internet.

Technically yes. But you can't get it in the US. There is malaria prophylaxis available for travelers, in fact there are multiple options -- some more convenient than others; but they aren't vaccines.

💀 but seriously the CDC recs should identify specific areas where the outbreak triggering the alert occurred. If you aren’t going near those areas you shouldn’t need them There is ofc a non-zero chance of getting infected but there is also a non-zero chance of getting struck by lightning..

Apparently it was widely introduced in 2023. Surprised it wasn't bigger news.

It never even occurred to me to check. We went there went on a family trip last summer. As far as I know none of us did. Also I have friends that have a time share there and go often- they never get vaccinated either. There are alot of mosquitoes but bug spray worked fine.

What vaccine preventable diseases are treated with antibiotics?

For the vast majority of tourists, the only vaccines the CDC recommends are ones you should have anyway (measles). https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/destinations/traveler/none/costa-rica
