The Idea of You

If you don't compare it to the book and take it on its own merit, it's quite good. Anne was surprisingly good, but she's not Solene from the book.

Didn’t read the book; I watched the movie and thought it was great!

Sick at home and really enjoyed this. Thanks for the tip!

How come I can’t get past Anne Hathaway? I struggle buying into her as any character because her Anne-ness is so overpowering to me.
Thinking about who I would have preferred instead.

I mostly enjoyed it, but the premise was pretty ridiculous. I didn’t really get a connection from them-just physical attraction. Which is fine-but not going to sustain him longing after her for 5 years!

I saw the trailer and it looked like the premise was that she was lucking out getting this young hot guy, but I find it so weird, this idea that SHE would not be the catch. A lot of women m in their 40s are gorgeous, fit, accomplished and interesting, and it's very weird to hear her say, "I'm too old for you." As if he's the catch in the scenario. It's just stupid. Their age difference should be a non issue, not the premise of the movie

?

Haven’t read the book or seen the movie yet, but as a woman in her late 40s with kids (including sons) there’s no way I would feel comfortable dating a 20 something or even 30 something. So I completely understand the premise of the movie and why the female lead would say such a thing.

Agree, like Julia Roberts her personality just dominates any roles she's in. And she's less charming and funny than JR, which makes it a harder sell.

Kate Hudson would have been perfect for the role

Definitely not. She is a ditz and it’s hard to get past that in her roles.
I liked Anne.

This feels like the “Bridges of Madison County” for our generation of moms. Not great art but it scratches an itch.

Also - I want her house.

Interesting that you mention Julia Roberts. I saw a commercial for this last night, and it seemed to be edited to invoke Julia Roberts. For example, a big laugh that when I heard it I thought that sounds like Julia Roberts.

This is not surprising. Her breakout role in The Princess Diaries was basically as a mini Julia Roberts. Gary Marshall directed both that movie and Pretty Woman and even employed actors playing similar characters in both (the stylist, the chauffeur.) She’s often been patterned as a Julia Roberts type and as she ages she’s following a similar aesthetic - big hair, waif thin. I like her better though. I think she’s a better actor than Julia.

It's kind of crazy that gender identity is considered so fluid and people have new and bold ideas about it, but a woman in her 40s still considers it transgressive and unusual to be with a man in his 30s? Huh

I think Anne Hathaway is far more talented than Julia Roberts.

She was great in this movie.
