drinking a beer while breastfeeding

It is NOT RECOMMENDED, and socially, it's never a good look.

You're never sure that the parent in question pumps and dumps, or waits the suggested 2 hours after nursing again. Different bodies process alcohol differently, and there are various levels of tolerance to alcohol in the human species. Some individuals (it generally runs in families) lack some of the enzymes to metabolize alcohol, in which case any amount of alcohol can be dangerous.

Just as more research on alcohol consumption has lowered the threshhold of recommended amounts over the years, so will recommendations while brestfeeding change as well.

Best never to drink while pregnant or nursing. A "duh" thing, of course.

Are you a childless dad? Nothing you posted is true. You need to google this.

*I don't think it's worth the risk drinking at all during pregnancy.

The biggest danger from a nursing mother drinking is if she gets really drunk and drops her baby. The alcohol the baby gets from breast milk is negligible (similar to the amount in fruit juice). And the BEST time to drink alcohol is WHILE physically nursing the baby because then your body can process the alcohol before the next nursing session.

All this to say is MYOB because what you are describing does not seem very harmful to the baby at all.

+1 to all of this. People are so uneducated about this stuff, and a lot of people just want to seize on an excuse to shame and control women.

Has anyone EVER heard of a baby developing a some kind of brain issue (I don't even know what it would be? delayed fetal alcohol syndrome? ADHD? IDK) because its mother drank a bit while breastfeeding (something that is actually pretty common, especially outside the US)? No. Because this is not a real thing.

Oh, this PP will not benefit from googling. They need to just be quiet.

This is absolutely fine. Breastmilk alcohol transfer is only as high as BAC. Let's say a woman has a couple beers, we'll guess BAC of .02. That means the breastmilk would have an alcohol concentration of .02%. For context, grape juice has an ABV of 10-40 times that.

Getting sloshed while caring for an infant is more dangerous because of the impairment of caring for a kid. But pearl clutching over mom having a single beer, there's just simply not enough alcohol transferred to make a difference

Hoping OP is just a troll, but in the off chance they are not, OP makes a good argument for non-drinkers like me to carry around a beer for the purposes of keeping judgemental morons away. Good grief.

Our pediatrician recommended to my wife to drink up to 6oz of yeasty beer/day to stimulate milk production.

Later she mentioned that to one of his PAs, who just gave her a funny look.

Wife later mentioned this strange interaction to the Doc, who said, oh, yeah, PA is Mormon, so...

Let’s just pin this response and delete all the others.

Shut up, OP. Seriously a sip or even a pint of beer is fine. I remember they said beer would help milk lol.

IGNORANCE is not a good look Pp. In fact it makes you actually trashy. Especially righteous ignorance. Go back to dr google and start over.

Women are so unkind to each other. Why do you care if someone is drinking a beer and Breastfeeding? It's none of your business.

As someone who had their 7 week old in the PICU for days fighting to breath due to her baby picking up a virus in public, I am not so worried about a sip of beer.

People do not realize how dangerous it is to have young babies out in public like this. Sure a quick run to the grocery store with the baby in a carrier is probably going to be ok but I very much judge the parents who have their baby in a shoulder-to-shoulder crowd where people are yelling and shouting (spit and droplets) all around. To me the sip of beer is not the problem here.

My cousin's 6 month old picked up RSV from daycare and had to be hospitalized. Should she be whipped in the public square too? She only made $2 an hour after taxes and daycare fees. Is it ok with you that she had her baby in daycare?

Quick everybody, let's find new ways to make motherhood even more burdensome, isolating and lonely!!!!!!!!!!!

I think breastfeeding moms should be whipped for eating sweets. Goes without saying formula moms should be whipped.

You sound like you're projecting. Let me guess, that 7 week old was in daycare by 6 months?

I breastfeed, homeschool and do sequester my newborns to avoid getting a common virus. However, I'm not going to look down my nose at mom for having a 6 week old out, even drinking a beer. I assume they have PPD and are trying to feel like a human again. As long as she's not doing something that is immediately dangerous it is none of my business, and none of your's either. There are much much bigger social problems than mom having a can of beer one time. Alot of American moms are back at work BEFORE six weeks because they have zero paid leave off.
