pk4 has also moved quickly at hyde addison so far. are there more seats, or even fewer IB family acceptances this year? either way, seems like a good year to be on the school’s waitlist.

Hyde-Addison nearly always moves a lot. It's a nice, but heavily OOB school that is nearly no one's first choice. Every year folks predict it will be the year that it suddenly gets substantial IB buy-in, but it just doesn't look to be happening. It's majority folks commuting from EOTP who didn't get into the closer good schools they wanted. Kids in the H-A IB go private or commute to schools further West.

Yes this. It’s a safety choice for many families - looks good on paper and enthusiastic boosters but once faced with actually doing the commute other options become more attractive to a lot of people who get matches. It’s really only a convenient choice if you work in Georgetown or live in Dupont/Foggy Bottom (and are going OOB to secure a different middle/high feeder). Otherwise you’re probably driving kids against rush hour to school and then in rush hour to work (or back home to WFH) and repeat at the end of the day.

There’s also a good number of transient families - kids bussed there from JBAB military base and other families in rented housing downtown, and diplomat/international families. They are here for a couple years then get new orders so as they tell the school they won’t be reenrolling between now and August, that frees up more spots.

My conclusion is HA has the success it has (at least test score wise and reputation) is because most of the families there are highly motivated for their kids to be successful and willing/able to put in the effort to get there every day.

We actually got a match on results day for HA last year, tried all summer to figure out if adding 60-90 minutes commuting per day made sense, and then gave the spot up in July to reenroll at our IB. Came to deeply regret that, this last year at our IB was pretty awful. Lotteried again and got lucky with a good waitlist number and an offer this week. Fingers crossed it’s a better environment for my kid.

really interesting stuff here on hyde addison, thanks! any idea why the school doesn’t have the IB community buy-in like a lot of the other elementary schools west of the area (key, mann, etc)?

They do have the IB community buy in. 75% of the kids who live IB go to H-A. There's just not that many IB kids to begin with (148), so the school itself is only 30% IB.

Because its IB population is wealthy and goes private. They only consider a fancier public school than DCPS is willing to offer.

No, that’s only 75% of the kids who go public. Doesn’t count the many, many kids who go private. It’s a rich area. 75% of IB public kids is actually low for WOTP. It’s like 95%+ at most of them.

yes, this is what is giving me concern about hyde addison. i get that the IB community is rich but so are the key and mann IB communities, and those schools have a significantly larger IB student population. we’re non-IB and considering hyde addison so maybe i shouldnt care about this but just trying to understand the hyde addison dynamics relative to peer public elementary schools.

Have you done the open house and talked to the staff? Met any families in real life? I was also on the fence about it (and granted again we haven’t started there yet) but I really found the open house reassuring. And we have a family in my neighborhood that was formerly IB and moved, they chose to keep their kids at HA despite it being a bit of a haul from our EOTP neighborhood. Their kids are thriving and that was also helpful to see/talk about.

Top elementary schools for IB participation. Janney and Mann at 95%. Lafayette 92%, Murch 89%, Stoddert 87%, Key 85%, Hearst 84%, Eaton 81%, O-A and Ross 79%. Then H-A at 75%.
