Why have 3+ kids if you can’t afford a babysitter?

What? We bring both our kids to the music store because their music lessons are back to back. We play tic tac toe with one while we wait for the other. How on earth does that inconvenience you? You think children should not be out in public? Maybe you need to move to a retirement community.

Why do you assume it’s appropriate to bring kids everywhere? It’s not. It’s not appropriate to bring them to adult events.

Even bringing five people into someone’s waiting room is inappropriate in my opinion.

Or do you gave difficulties separating yourself from children?

+1. This is one of the strangest posts I have seen here and that’s saying a lot.
We have kids because we want kids and want a family. We don’t take them places they’re not allowed to be but that might mean both parents can’t attend the event.

I wish you could see how insane this is.

You either can’t afford a babysitter and so you are missing out on life events or you have a psychological problem and can’t separate yourself from your children.

Babysitters are a fortune. That money is better off in the college fund. Not missing out.

What? Going through flying with two kids, just to have them sit in a hotel room, with a stranger, to attend some stupid wedding... is utterly absurd. DP.

DP I had a child free wedding but don’t attend them (I also didn’t care if people didn’t attend ours for that reason). I only have so much money and time off. Spending two travel days with my kids which are all of our worst days only to send them to a babysitter is what’s actually insane. Wish you could see that!

Have you considered leaving them at home with someone?

I have 3 kids and we regularly higher a sitter for the youngest one so she does not have to get schlepped places that are only appropriate for our older kids/or disrupt her nap schedule. Or we have a sitter come so we can go on a date night. Or so we can do something with one kid individually.

I’m not sure we would have gone for #3 if we couldn’t have afforded childcare help. It’s one thing to bring younger siblings along to a sports practice where there is a park to play on next to the field. But it’s not fair for them to get dragged everywhere or not be able to spend 1:1 time with them.

People want to spend their PTO and weekends with their kids, not traveling to a boring wedding.

Like who? Most people in DC, like us, have no family here. I would not trust a complete stranger to watch my kids for several days.

I make 500K a year, I can afford a babysitter. I'm not dragging my kids on a flight to sit for hours without us in a strange town, strange room with someone we don't know. To fly back the next day. Pure insanity.

I would go if we could all enjoy the event together and spend time with family.

It’s called a nanny.

Do you just go everywhere together? Like a gypsy tribe?

What a circus.

What’s insane is that you think you need to be dragging your kids everywhere.

I don’t believe for a second that you make 500k.

It’s very easy to say no. Likely these people are a required invite like a weird cousin the parents made them invite. The bride and groom don’t really want them to come and certainly don’t want them to show up with uninvited kids.
