Having surgery - handling telling parents

Anonymous
OP, what is the timing here? Is the surgery before their planned trip or during?

I am very close to my parents and normally wouldn't keep something like this from them. But I would think about doing something different in this circumstance. Depending on the timing, there might be no way to tell them in advance without ruining their trip, and that would be a shame.

This.

If you don’t tell them, they’ll enjoy their trip. If you do tell them, that makes you feel better but ruins their trip.

Don't ruin their trip. Not telling them before their trip doesn’t make you all the sudden not “close” with your parents. It’s odd that you feel like you need to tell them everything in order to be “close” to them.

Is the surgery while they are on the trip? I would not tell them before. Tell them after they get home. You can say the scheduling was up in the air.
