Whose kid has yet to decide?

I keep saying annoying and platitudinous things like, “it’ll be fine…of course you’ll be able to pick…no school is perfect but they’re all great options…go with your gut…” As it turns out, those sorts of comments don’t seem to help much.

Funny, it always seems to work for me when I tell women “Calm down!“

Why???

You are the problem.

Your kid has made his/her choice. Stop trying to control their future!

Because schools offer merit at the last minute. So far, waiting since my kid decided (9 days ago) til now saved us 4k a year at first choice school. 16k is a price for waiting and doing nothing else. Offered 6k a year at number 2

I’m paying for this. I’m controlling my financial future.

Did you do anything to ask for more merit? Or did it just...appear?

Not PP.
The schools that offer increasing merit at the last minute are Jeff Selingo "buyer" schools: they are more desperate to fill spots than the sought after "seller"/selective schools, so they throw money at applicants. Families seeking merit can get the best deals at these schools.

If kids are stuck between schools or just reluctant to commit, have them start an actual 4-yr planner for their degree at each of the schools they are deciding between. Pull up each school’s gen eds, a sample plan for their major, and map out what courses they will have AP/IB/Dual enrollment credit for. Especially look at sophomore and junior year. Read course descriptions and really figure out what the academics will look like. Two schools with supposedly the same degree may actually have very different programs and it may quickly become clear that one is preferred over the other. Or it may be that both programs are virtually the same, so it doesn’t matter academically which one is chosen. At the least, your kid will have a better idea of their courses, and at best they’ll be able to decide and be confident about it.

It’s actually a “mild seller”. It was a merit award that was increased. I think maybe because it’s for an undersubscribed major? Not sure.

But yes, smaller buyers give a lot more money depending on how their yield is looking.

Suspect fafsa is making this hard for schools.

I think he is not going to pick the one I would choose for him (or the one I would choose for me, for that matter) but, at this point, it's up to him.

Why would you be?!?! I could list a lot of reasons. I hate it when people come on here and act like it isn’t normal for parents to be stressed.

I hate it when people are rude, judgmental, selfish and short-sighted.

My DC deciding among 5 ivies! Seriously, we have spent the past month revisiting them and meeting with different departments. No wrong choices, just wish DC would hurry and decide.

Excessive punctuation in this thread!!

Why are you reading this forum if you aren’t involved with your kid’s college app process?

Kid wants to stick to the initial decision, I think the 2nd is the better choice and kid is just taking the easier route.

Talk about stress! But maybe I need a lesson from these other posters. It’s their decision! Let go of the reins.

Did they revisit the last minute school?

DP. Ok, maybe PP was a little rude, but I'm not seeing the rest of your litany in her comment.

No liking her cheeky reaction doesn't warrant a major gaslighting attempt. Sheesh.

We’re still waiting to get the financial aid package from 2 schools.

So we can then turn around and appeal for more money from the first choice school. They have a ton of talent money that they throw at people, and I know they could easily find a few thousand more for my child.

Second choice school extended deadline to June 1. We have time.

Insanely high. Trying to decide on the college of kid's dreams but is a stress cooker vs. not. So so so so hard.

Mine. My husband actually offered the coin flip option to DS tonight.

I think he’s hoping he gets off the waitlist at his #1 in time to avoid making a decision between the other two but I doubt that will happen.
