If you live in DC proper

Live in Cleveland Park. I walk to work, spouse drives. More driving for kid activities in evenings and on weekends. Kids started taking public transit independently in sixth grade.

We walk everywhere. My kid takes the bus to school and has since she was 12. We drive maybe once a week for groceries. Car is older than my 14 year old.

She's been fully independent on Metro, taking it daily across the city, since 13.

1) Walk (w/in 1-2 miles), drive, or uber (if parking is an issue). Used to metro, but don't go anywhere that would make metro useful anymore (used to commute by metro before WFH though). We don't own bikes. I used to have one on Capitol Hill, but after the 3rd bike was stolen I gave up. Not sure DH even knows how to ride one (probably does, but I've never witnessed this; prefers running ). Car is 14 years old, and we just hit 100K, mostly from long distance road trips.

2) Kids walk everywhere; started taking metro and bus alone in 6th, and used it to commute to school and sports practice for years. One kid used to ride bike to friends' houses; biking not an option for one of ours. Kids who can drive now were typical of DC kids in getting drivers' licenses later than is common. Kid drives more in summer due to location of job (suburban, no bus or Metro) and friends (think, Baltimore suburbs).

I have to drive my teen to and from school now, first year. She started taking the public bus last year at 11 to and from school, then switched schools this year. I metro to and from work. Spouse drives to and from work. We have a 2019 car, it has 36,000 miles. That includes 3-5 trips to and from New England yearly. I average 6 miles of walking per day.

Walk or bike to work. Drive on weekends, mostly to soccer and the like.

Kid started commuting by metro/bus at 12 for middle school.
