What are the norms regarding driving to work travel?

I think they should pay Tues / Thurs hotel room or pay you overtime (driving plus conference is a long day)!

Yeah I drive for personal trips but 5.5 hours is too much.

I would expect a hotel tues, weds and Thursday. Maybe work a half day Friday if you want to but driving 5.5 hours is enough imo

Unless it's your preference to drive or a really inconvenient combination of cities for air travel, you should be flying there. You don't ask a professional to drive 5+ hours each way. And if you are driving, you should get hotels on either side, not tack the drive onto a workday.

The norm at my company is that we would not expect you to drive.

NYC is closer that 5.5 hours and I never drive there for work.

Mileage reimbursement is .67 per mile. Are you sure it will really be less expensive to drive?

In any event I for sure would go the night before. It’s not safe to leave a 4:30 am and drive that far as the sole driver.

You need to talk to you boss. Driving up one morning and back the next night and attending both days of conference isn’t a good idea.

This ain’t commuting to work. This is work related travel. You can’t be expected to be driving all hours of the night. Driving also isn’t all that reliable as there can be accidents, weather events, car issues, etc that could delay you.

I would ask him to lay out for you the expectations related to work related travel. You can use this trip to work with. Don’t agree to unreasonable things.

I would tell them you will be late arriving for the conference. I wouldn’t give up a night of sleep and being short on sleep and driving is a bad combination. Tell them you will leave by 7 and should be there by 1 assuming the drive goes well.

Ask them for a 2nd night at the hotel. Ludicrous for them to expect you to drive 5.5 hours at night after a LONG day at a conference.

Red flag IMO.
Politely ask for the hotel for two nights

BTW is the conference at your actual headquarters?

I’d fly like the others. Adding ten hours to your week doesn’t seem fair to you. While others can work or read on the plane, you’ll just be stuck driving the ten hours.

You should not be expected to drive five hours home late at night and go in as normal to work but you might have to do that if they expect it and you’re new.

Stop for a minute. Do you want to drive or fly? Don’t worry about what they assume or want it whatever. Ask for what you want, in a nice way. If you want to drive or they ask you to drive, then yes, of course it’s reasonable to ask for a hotel and mileage.

Don’t do this.
Just ask for the hotel.

In my company, the norm would be:

Tuesday: work half day, then drive to conference site and overnight in hotel
Wednesday: conference, hotel
Thursday: conference, hotel
Friday: drive home, no work

Reimbursement for mileage and meals covered from Tuesday dinner through Friday breakfast

This sounds very reasonable. You could also consider not working Tuesday morning, but bring your laptop computer with you and work at the hotel for an hour or two on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, if you have work that can be done remotely.

You live in the same city as HQ/conference location, but it will take you 5 hours?
