This simply isn't true. And who would make that kind of effort to send their kids to Alexandria's schools. Some of the east end schools (George Mason, Brooks, Mount Vernon) are the worst in town.

I would say a significant number of cars dropping kids off are MD tagged, but I think they live in Alexandria and just avoiding paying the personal property tax to register cars in VA (aka tax evasion).

Either Maryland or Florida plates.

Nannies?

I'm the Maury poster- No, not nannies. These women were clearly the moms.

We're at a different east end elementary and see the same thing at drop-off. They're definitely moms. One was very heavily involved in the PTA up until the pandemic and listed a Maryland address in the directory. I assume the parents were divorced and the dad lived in the City of Alexandria, but I don't really know.

They could have a house (like on the eastern shore) or business in Maryland and register their car there. Honestly, I don't blame them. I have friends who register their cars at the grandparents address to skip the car tax and they drive around with OOS plates. But they live in George Mason territory. I'm not a rat.

So Alexandria builds high end affordable housing and does not ensure legal status. Accepts a “fill it yourself” worksheet as proof of income. No requirements that they pay tacked on the self-declared income. Fails to enforce vehicle registration. And wonders why there is a revenue shortage? Then has the community puppets demand Richmond pay more money to us for our schools. Winning.

Wait, Brooks is now one of the worst? That's my school. Is this true?

No, it isn't. Brooks is like the pretty girl everyone hates on mostly because it's children of rich af SAHMs in Rosemont / Del Ray. So people trash talk it.

It's true. Look at the proficiency numbers for the kids who can't afford tutors. 27% in reading and 25% in math.

41 reported incidents of behaviors of a safety concern
7 reported incidents for behaviors that endanger the health, safety or welfare of others.

Even George Mason, the other really bad east side school, isn't as bad as Brooks.

Sure, but we aren't talking with the mom of a kid at 27%. Context matters. But you knew that.

I agree that this is it, and they likely can't afford the personal property tax. I don't have to pay it any more because my car is such an old model (there is an exemption), but I'm not particularly invested in whether others pay it.

I think it's more that privilege matters. I've been in Alexandria long enough to know that the mom of kids not in the 27% don't care at all about the 73% of low income kids at Brooks who cannot read.

They can ignore how bad the schools are while hiring tutors: "my kid is doing great academically!" and they can ignore how violent even the elementary schools have become because: "my kid never sees the violence!".

You are callous and you reek of privilege. But you knew that.

What I hate about this city is their corruption is out in the open and no one does a thing about it. No one.

Remember when the last mayor put city hall up for sale?!

FL plates are probably military.

Nobody but you GAF about your 'privilege' argument, especially when people like you try to conflate it with the results of work, decency, and ambition.

My kids earned it. The other kids are lazy brats with crappy parents.

I'd love it Jeff ID' you. I'd bet $50 you are exactly what I know you are.

This is revenue for the city. Money for roads and transportation. So the City just has more and more people on the take and no one to pay for it. The Glebe Rd high rises will bring in 500 more kids with a negative tax base.

It's theft. People who engage in tax evasion, mean the rest of us have to pay more. It's no different than thieves or shoplifting causing rising prices for the rest of us - we all have to pay for their crimes. Some of these cars are souped up - the owners can afford to pay the tax.

Report them report them report them.

The City has a program where people “create” forms documenting income. There is no requirements for W-2s or tax returns. Then they are confounded the school population is increasing and they do not have the revenue to fund the schools, police, fire, roads, etc. The City is facilitating tax evasion. Absolute insanity.
