Left hand turns on red lights

Anonymous
Truly amazing how many people do not know how to drive and have never read a driving manual.

Yes, left turns on red are allowed in many places if it is from a one way street onto another one way street.

A loved one is now recovering from her second surgery caused by a driver who turned left on red, from a lane that had lane markers indicating straight only and a "no left turn" sign. His moment of careless or impatience caused her and many others years of problems.

Was this in DC, VA or MD? I am in VA and have noticed it happening frequently lately and just don't know where this bad habit is coming from?

I'm sorry about your loved one, PP. I hope they make a full recovery.

It's not a bad habit, you just don't know how to drive...

Thanks. It was in DC, with a DC licensed driver in a car with DC plates. And it was not from a one way street to a one way street. The victim will probably always have some pain and limited range of motion. I am angry, sad, and also so relieved it wasn't far worse.

Another terrible driver who doesn't know how to drive.

Good god people, you need driver's Ed.

) Unless a sign prohibiting a turn is in place, vehicular traffic facing a steady red signal, after stopping as required by subsection (h) of this section, cautiously may enter the intersection and make:

(1) A right turn; or

(2) A left turn from a one-way street onto a one-way street.

Reason #18385758291 why 95% of the people in the DMV shouldn't even be allowed to drive. They don't even know basic driving 101 and then think people obeying the law are the wrong ones,.lol.

As if they teach this obscure rule in drivers ed. Thanks for pointing this rule out but let’s not pretend you are such an awesome driver.

It’s not obscure. You didn’t pay attention or read the state driving manual. You’re just a terribly uninformed driver.

It’s not rare at all. Many cities have one way streets that intersect other one way streets. I do left turns on red all the time in Baltimore, for example. Many towns also have one way streets that intersect other one way streets with lights. Very common encounter.

Again, it did not occur on a one way street.

Fairfax County police said that the left turn on red is legal for the entire state of Virginia.

The same goes for the state of Maryland, according to Montgomery County Police.

For both states, the driver must come to a complete stop before turning.

Not in DC, but legal in Maryland and Virginia.

The only thing that makes sense is if the car enters the intersection before the light turns red, and gets caught. If it remains there, it may impede the cross traffic - or cars turning in front of it. cIn that case, the car would either have to go forward or backward to get out of the intersection. In these cases I think the safer move is to go forward if all is clear.

Yes, this is called clearing the intersection. Legal move.
