Cost of Vietnam Trip

This is OP. I partly wanted to post to see the ridiculously high prices other people in DCUrban pay for things. I’ve been to Vietnam before and it is incredibly accessible and cheap unless you insist on the top end of the luxury market. I just bought tickets for $1,400 per person and definitely will not be spending tens of thousands while in Vietnam. And I’ve found ti a country with easy logistics. I assume hay for the poster that paid $30k, about $20k went into the pockets of National Geographic and their marketing machine.

It's fairly cheap to eat in Southeast Asia if you do not eat in any fancy restaurants. Even if you do, it doesn't cost that much. A full meal street food style can be as low as 2 USD. You can feed your family with $100 well in restaurants.

I remember staying in a 4 star hotel and they had a great buffet that ended at 11am. It was really good food-more like brunch style. Omelet station, Vietnamese food, Chinese food, Sushi, French style croissant and pastries, even soup and pizza. It was all included in the hotel cost. I had to double checked everyday if it was a different cost.

Yeah the hotel buffets at a lot of Asian hotels is wild. I think it's sort of this leftover remnant of the colonial age.

So you were just baiting people in order to ridicule them? Seems pretty mean spirited. And I say this as someone who is definitely a budget traveler but don’t think that entitles me to be all smug and judgy about other people’s choices.

We are a family of 5. Unfortunately the flights there cost as much or more than the trip. We had 13 days in Vietnam and 3 in Cambodia. It was an amazing trip and we traveled all over.

Wait, the trip cost 30k for 5 people?

Pretty much. 16 days is a long time, it inclined all internal flights and transfers, lodging (4* hotels), activities and most food.

you have to work hard to spend that much in vietnam.

A fool and their money are soon parted.

Yeah definitely. 15K for Vietnam tour, ha ha, the National Geographic peeps are laughing. For this person, consider paying a Vietnamese (or whatever country) professional tour guide $1-2K total for 15 days, they will take it.

While this is dated, I went a decade ago to Hanoi for 5 days, probably spent $200 on food for 2 people. Spent points for hotels and airfare, the hotels there were only $50-100 for a high quality 4 star hotel (something that would cost $500 today in NYC).

LOL.. 40 K to go to Vietnam, even for 16 days is insane. Food is insanely cheap there, unless you only eat tourist food.

We've traveled to Taiwan, over Christmas break for 2 weeks for a quarter of this price.

heck we have done Maui for 12days a LOT less than this($15K)

You realize that a huge portion of the cost is the airfare right?

You do realized we have to fly to both Maui and Taiwan. You can't walk there either.

As you said, your info is very dated - what exactly is the point of comparing costs of a hotel 10 years in Vietnam with a hotel in New York today? Surely you see how irrelevant this is.

NP. Nah, I went there last January and stayed in a gorgeous hotel for about $89 a night. Hotels and food in Vietnam are mind-boggling inexpensive, and such good quality.

Flight were included in the prices I quoted. Granted Maui was 2021 so flights were cheaper, but still a hell of a lot less than what this person spent for Vietnam. Excursions/activities, food and even a rental car was still very expensive that year.

Hotels and food in Vietnam are extremely cheap. Food is amazingly great.

I didn't care for Vietnam as a whole, the cities were intense. Liked Hoi An and the tribes up in the mountains of north Vietnam. But no need to spend a fortune in the country.

Google is your friend OP, but as others have said it depends on your preferences and levels of luxury desired and where you are traveling.

It’s about 1200-1500$ for RT tickets from Dulles to Hanoi.

A clean hotel in a good location with 2 queen sized beds might cost us$75/night in Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi. Double that if you want a name brand American hotel (Marriott/Sheraton) or if you’re staying in a fancy beach resort in a more remote area (ex Phu Quoc/Da Nang.)

Food depends again on your preferences. Are you happy with clean looking restaurants that are well reviewed or do you need to eat at a hotel chain restaurant daily. As others have said food and transport are pretty cheap.

Flights are not THAT expensive unless they flew business class, which maybe they did, but if not then they overspent on everything else while there.

Nat Geo tours are high end and expensive. You definitely do not need to spend that much.

You should spend 3K for 13 days for 5 people in Vietnam, you were doing it wrong.
