How many diapers a day with 3yo

Anonymous
My 3 year old isn't potty trained. We are working on it. Anyway, I don't change him anywhere near that much. He tells me he has to poop so he does that in potty. Diapers are only for pee right now and I change them when I see they are really full. Maybe once every 4-5 hours?

8-10 times a day is ridiculous.

I change my 3 year old about 3 times. He usually holds his pee and goes all at once. I’ve tried potty training many times but he hates sitting on the potty (toilet or little plastic one) and will have accidents. Still, as a parent you should try every few months. 3 is pretty old not to be potty trained…

She needs to associate the feeling of peeing with being wet. Diapers are so good now that doesn't work with them. Switch to gerber potty training underwear. Its a bit absorbant so she wont leak everywhere. But needs to be changed if there is more than a drop. Take her potty every 40 min.

OP here thank you again for the advice, we've not been leaving the diapers until full, so will change a lot less frequently.

There's no developmental delays, we've had some tests to see if there's a reason she's got no idea when she wees or poos but nothing came up from them.

We can try training again, we found it quite difficult as we were ready to praise any success but we had none, when we've tried it ( we have tried twice)

OP here we tried in just undies for a week and a half with our first attempt and the connection never happened even when undies were soaked through

Yes would definitely wait until the diapers are full. This can actually help potty train. They will become a bit "uncomfortable" with a fully wet diaper and not like it as much.

For us, we didn't do any exact methods but had some incentives. We bought some underwear with his favorite character and offered a mini lollipop for every pee. Worked like a charm!

OP, you're doing fine. My DD was very similar -- we tried several times to potty train before it really started to take, and Oh Crap was totally useless for us. It just took more trial and error and repeating the training for her than it does for some other kids.

People on these boards can be really mean about kids who are potty training at 3. They trained their kids early, and this becomes the pinnacle of their parenting achievement and they are eager to insult other families who might have started later for whatever reason, or have a harder-to-train kid. It's actually sad. My kids are well past potty training age and I cannot imagine being smug about something so basic at this point. Trust me, in a few years all of this will be a distant memory and will not matter at all anymore, it's just somewhat stressful and pressure-filled in the moment because it's a major milestone for the age. You'll get there.

Our son just turned three and isn't potty trained yet either. 8-10 is a ton. I'd say we average about 3 a day - pretty much when he wakes up, when he poops, before nap and/or if it's looking like there's a lot of pee.

OP here, thank you, I don't want to hold her back, but we've got nowhere, and just need to take breaks between potty training attempts as they're exhausting for her and us

So true

I waited until 3.5. Bought some good stickers. For two days, he peed through underwear. I bought pull-ups and he started using the toilet right away. The same day, he stopped peeing at night.

He is in underwear now almost always and we haven’t even opened second pack of pull-ups.

Every kid is different. But no, you don’t change after every pee. I was probably down to 3-4 diapers a day at the end.

8-10 is excessive. That’s more what you would expect with a newborn. For a three-year-old 3 to 4 a day is more around the norm. How long are there periods of staying dry? If it’s not long at all that you may not have any success with potty training, but give it a shot and see if maybe they’ll transition.

OP here, I have been changing worrying about rash, even though she's never had one. I've not changed her diaper since she woke up and it's twice as full as normal but she's still not bothered at all. I'm going to try and leave it another hour as it's wet but not full

OP here - sometimes it can be 30 mins between times I've changed and sometimes a couple of hours. There isn't many periods longer. They're never big wees just little ones so don't need changing straight away as I've learnt. Is potty training doable with these times?

Does he tell you or show any discomfort when he is wet or dirty? Every child is different and you can’t lose anything by trying the oh crap method for a few days.
