BASIS

Thanks! OP here—we’re coming from Takoma DC. At the open house I thought someone said we would have to contact the room parents for each grade and that there wasn’t a central directory. Will follow up on that since it sounds like maybe that’s not the case.

Takoma Metro to Gallery Place, then walk to BASIS. Airtag on the kid or connect their phone to Find My Iphone/other tracking app. They’d need to leave so early that the train shouldn’t be very packed.

This. You can also use Find My/tracking with an apple watch with cell service if you don’t want to get a smartphone for a 5th grader.

There is a school directory, for anyone who opted into having their information shared. It doesn't come out for a while after the beginning of the school year, though.

That said, I don’t put my own kid on metro, because I think metro is dangerous.

lol what? Metro is not dangerous.

On the topic of BASIS DC, their latest list of college acceptances was sent out - not bad for a graduating class of around 60 kids. Obviously, some are the same kid getting in multiple places...

Much better list than last year at any rate. Yale, Harvard, U Penn, Johns Hopkins, the rest meh, considering that these kids all had to take algebra no later than 7th grade. No MIT or Caltech.

The "meh" included Berkeley, Emory, Bryn Mahr, Boston College, Wellesley, Wesleyan, UVA,Vassar, Tufts, SCAD, Reed, McGill, among others. We are an incoming family (just enrolled our 4th grader) and this is a good list. I would proudly send my kid to any of these schools.

Lots of T25 and T50 schools there...certainly good results for such a small class

Just because you take algebra in 7th grade you have to go to MIT or Caltech. What?

Do you realize that DC only sends a handful of students to MIT each year, and Caltech even fewer?

For what it worth, a BASIS DC grad from last year is at Caltech and one from BASIS McLean (which has the same curriculum) is going to MIT.

If you want to go to MIT or Caltech, your best bet is to move to Fairfax County and go to TJ.

I do wonder about the BASIS model as preparation for a place like MIT... my husband is an alum and they don't accept any AP credits (which BASIS seems to make a big deal out of tauting.) We are sending our son there next year but I am definitely curious about how well they are prepping kids for serious math and science careers. No clue if our kids want to follow in their Dad's footsteps. No legacy at MIT either so they will need to get in on their own merits.
