Solar Eclipse

This is one I happen to agree with. What if the school gets fake glasses? What if the kids don’t use them properly. With dozens of articles from trained eye doctors saying it’s dangerous and cause permanent eye damage, even with glasses, especially for children, it equates to negligence if a child goes blind. It’s reasonable for a jury to find a child with a lifetime of blindness is worth in the tens of millions of dollars in real damages. Insurance companies will do everything in their power to not pay these claims. This is a bad move by fcps. They closed for rain, but they’re going to remain open for this.

My kid's FCPS ES got glasses. Parents can opt out, but otherwise kids are going out to watch.

Lucky.

My kid's ES got glasses for everyone but my 5th grader's teacher sent a note to parents that if anyone in the class acts up that day, they won't go outside. And given how many recesses have been canceled and silent lunches they've had this year, I think there's a better than average change my kid wouldn't get to see the eclipse. So I'm taking her out early so we can watch together.

Although, to be fair, I expect that very few students will actually be at school on Monday. So there's that. Families will either travel or just stay home and prepare to see the partial eclipse here.

Explain to me the traffic angle to this. The only schools that should be closing in the country are the ones in the path of totality where the mass of humanity from elsewhere is overrunning the place (myself included).

I feel the same...bad call FCPS!

FCPS should be doing early dismissal so everyone can take care of their own kids safety. The person who mentions behavior is correct-kids do not listen especially in large groups.

That’s exactly what I said in the last thread and was I was told I was being ridiculous. Hope that person is reading this thread!

And permissive parenting—kids don’t listen to adults anymore. It’s impossible to keep them safe.

That’s what my point was in the last thread that got locked. I’m not surprised by this decision at all. But some troll got the thread locked.

This is the THIRD thread you’ve started about this, yet you’re calling someone else the troll?

I didn’t start the original thread, which would have been #1. I commented in it though. When it got locked, I started a new thread but it strangely got locked immediately. And I’ve started this one so it’s actually only 2.

Typical FCPS- every school is doing something different. And the ones with more money bought glasses.

Are kids allowed to have regular recess before peak (2:30-3:00)?

FCPS also has not been very set on their plans.

And Dr. Reid will send us her weekly email Sunday about how exciting this will be!

I guess you’d say our ES “has more $” (are we talking PTA?), but they didn’t buy glasses and they have to stay inside in the afternoon.

There should be a 2 hr early release. This is ridiculous.

If you are this concerned, why on earth don’t you just pick your kids up early or keep them home that day? Surely this couldn’t be so very complicated for you?
