Our MS has the same rule. But apparently the tote bag my kid is using is totally fine.

My MCPS middle had the same rule back in the mid-aughts and I never understood it. The blanket reason was "safety" but the high school allowed it? Never made sense.

Classrooms in schools that have backpacks can be hard to navigate, because there are tripping hazards everywhere. The decision might be made because of the size of the classrooms, or because they assume high schoolers are better at navigating, or because the high school is so big that asking kids to return to their locker between periods is unreasonable.

It's OK because he doesn't have a shirt on.

ES, Grades K-4, 1976-1981
Absolutely no talking allowed in the cafeteria during lunch. If you were caught talking you were told to stand in the corner with your nose and toes against the wall. If they saw you move, even a little bit, they added more time.

HS, 1985-1989
No excess facial hair (beard, mustache) for boys. You had to wear socks with shoes. Boys couldn’t wear earrings that dangled below the earlobe. Girls were sent home if dresses weren’t a certain length. If you drove to school the administrators would use a stopwatch to make sure you didn’t sit in your car beyond a designated amount of time once you arrived. Two grade levels sat in the cafeteria and two sat in the gym on the bleachers before the first bell. Once the bell rang you had 3 minutes to get to your locker and class. Very strict policy regarding PDA (including holding hands).

Middle school, late 80s: Shorts could be no shorter than 4 inches above the knee. Both boys and girls. They were very strict about it. I think this would be impossible for girls today, based on the clothes I see in APS.

High school, early 90s: My public school district was sued for overtly supporting Christmas (things like Christmas trees in school lobbies), i.e., lack of separation of church and state. In response, they went too far the other way. We were forbidden from decorating our lockers or exchanging Christmas presents with friends on school property. Also, absolutely no Christmas or Hanukkah music at winter concerts. The only "seasonal" songs we could play/sing were things like "Sleigh Bells" and "Let It Snow."

No OTC meds allowed. Disproportionately harmed girls (of course).
