What I have learned in allowing my adult children into our business

We had a family business that was over 100 years old. But we had two nephews, next generation working there, who were not capable of taking over. Sadly, they were lazy and not capable of running it so we sold it. Now they are unemployed.

Security Moving & Storage?

How about telling your kids what expectations YOU have of THEM? They need to be there in their seats no later than 7:55am and don't think about leaving until 5:05pm. Explain that they are a direct reflection of the owner down to management, they need to know much is expected of them and they are being watched the most so act accordingly. Sounds like OP didn't set the tone from the start. If OP can't manage them, delegate to a trusted employee who won't go easy on them and won't let them coast at work.

Yes I guess I did contradict myself, what I meant to say was I would not have hired them until they had worked for someone else 1-2 years to build a strong furcation and then MAYBE would have brought them in.

A lot of complex conflicts with family working together.

That’s extremely odd, OP. There is a lot going on here that has nothing to do with young people working for a family business. You might want to seek therapy to uncover what the real problem is. A trained therapist in person who is fully qualified will be able to lead you there. Not a tech toy or an app.

Did no one outside of the family work in this business? That is odd.

Why do you care about nephews’ employment status? That’s distant and not your business.

Moving and storage companies are huge syndicates usually. Most are national or at least regional.

You didn't raise your kids right, then you didn't hire the right employees for your business. (Nepotism for the "win"!) The fault is yours on both counts, OP.

Was it your business, OP? Or your ILs business?

DH works for a family business. It’s a large company but still privately held. In their industry there are a number of firms like this. The owners and sr execs all know each other. Kids don’t work for dad, they work for a friend. They start at the same wage as comparable employees and are treated the same. The only difference is they really don’t have to interview for the job.

Kids have been fired. Owners have told dad what really happened with little Johnny and why he was fired. They’ve been doing this for 20 plus years and now the grandkids are having their turn.

This is very typical.

Non family can’t stay in companies like this for too long or their growth opportunities will be hampered by nepotism but skills that can’t me marketed to other companies are useless. Did the nephews complete high school at least? If so, they should be able to get a job.

There is a person in my orbit with extreme Owner’s Kid energy. Lives with their parents, despite having a partner and several school-age children. Can’t communicate, can organize (themselves or their children), can’t launch independently. Activities involving their children require so, so much extra effort from other adults to get them signed up, dressed appropriately, and ready to go in the right place at the right time.

Thank you for bringing me my phone when I left. I will stay away longer this time. Is 6 months good? Or would 9 be better?
