Grinnell

Seems like some sketchy counting of "applications"!

Grinnell is in the middle of serious meth towns, right next to where Mollie Tibbetts and Xavior Harrellson were recently murdered. It’s a miserably ugly town with miserable tryhard professors either micromanaging (or offering pot to) kids who weren’t accepted to Ivies. It sounds too good to be true because it is. It’s a sham school.

This is so wrong that it's hilarious.

Grinnell is a good, rigorous school and I've been impressed with all of the graduates I've met.

It’s a scholars’ community. The open curriculum means kids study topics they love, and everyone seems enthusiastic about their classes. Nice kids. Outstanding academic and athletic facilities. Rigorous and in-depth education. Huge endowment for a school of its size. The town is very small but has some cute restaurants and coffee shops. There’s also a Walmart Supercenter in town for inexpensive purchases. Shuttles to the airport, Walmart, and a big mall near Iowa City. Active music and theater scenes. No shortage of things to do, despite the isolated location. Lots of themed parties. The dorms are being upgraded and will all have A/C at some point (I can’t remember the date). Kids work hard but seem happy, and most play hard. Free weekly music lessons if you want them. It’s not for everyone, but my DC thinks it’s heaven.

Your post may convince someone who has never been there and doesn’t know anyone who attended. Unfortunately for you, most people in the DMV actually know some real Grinnell alums, so we don’t buy your take at all.

Same here, seems like DC applied by accident. Never realized their acceptance rate is so low.

How is the overall student community, any geek scene, and what should we know.

Not sure if this is a typo, but there's definitely a geek scene (but no Greek scene). Plenty of anime and D&D nerds, with a healthy supply of hippies, stoners and woke SJWs rounding out the student body. It's the anti-W&L.

Grinnell has a very high percentage of international students. I think it’s about 20%. It’s a perfect little society in the middle of nowhere.

Yes, it’s definitely geeky. There are a range of kids there, but enthusiasm for learning binds them together. Whatever their political proclivities, most are respectful of others. They are highly articulate and persuasive.

My colleague sent both of her kids there. The younger is graduating this year.

Every employer knows how tough it is to get accepted to Grinnell. It's impressive.

My DS was accepted too! How does it compare to Honors programs at top state flagships (ex. Michigan or UNC)? He was also accepted to both of those...

Very sad about these incidents, but they weren’t exactly recent or connected to Grinnell College. One was five years ago, and the little boy disappeared three years ago. Two stories from the headlines do not mean there is a high rate of violent crime there. You’re making a big leap with this.

Grinnell is a great school but remote iowa is not for everyone. The weather is depressing. You should definitely visit before committing

Bitter much?

Annie Le and Suzanne Jovin were murdered at Yale.

Well, basically, it's one large honors program.

Agreed. Probably true for most of T30 LACs.
