I have a friend whose daughter attends. She seems to be really enjoying it, but it seems very materialistic. I know my friend has to spend a lot of money just so her daughter can keep up with her friends' lifestyles. Seems exhausting.

Came across in search and posting an update:

Over 55,000 applications and roughly 8,500 acceptances for this cycle. So call it a 17% admit rate or so.

Whatever the stereotype, people are interested.

P.S. not a student or parent, though our h.s. junior has a cousin there so we have visited before.

My nephew is there and LOVES it but definitely be prepared to spend a lot of money to go out on the town

We know two kids there. They were fairly solid, but not tippy top kids in MS and HS. They had a few AP’s for example, but mostly honors who got A- and B+. They are definitely not Uber rich with jets, yachts, etc. Two working parents for both of them. But they come from a wealthy town where that kind of lifestyle is around. I think UMC kids are fine there, but expect to pay the COA of attendance plus $$$ for Miami Beach, Greek, etc if your kid is prone to be in that kind of crowd.

I think that if expense is not an issue, Miami can be great. I believe there is a housing shortage that will require some students to move off campus; but if course, off campus housing in Miami will be extremely expensive. John Gosselin's daughter, Hannah (from Kate plus 8) goes there.

But there are other types of people at Miami and my DD, who is not into clubs or partying and is DMV UMC but not wealthy, is happy and loves the school.

There are sports, clubs, and greek life and Miami is a terrific city with restaurants, sports teams, culture and concerts that is available to students. And my DD's friends are serious about their studies and have a variety of academic interests.

I really want to make sense of this thread. Are all the "DD"s the same person?

My DC is interested. They have stats that indicate they could get into higher ranked schools, but really like the idea of going somewhere warm and sunny. That said, maybe the APs and test scores can help get them merit. Everyone at UM seemed so happy.

What are equivalent schools, especially for someone who might also be trying for Michigan (ignore the weather issue)?

UF is the top school in Florida, but the acceptance rate for OOS is very low ( around 10%)

Higher ranked, lower admit - USC (we know several who chose USC over Mich)
Lower ranked, easier admit - Tulane

Are you saying Tulane is an easier admit that UMiami?

DC has thought a lot about USC, but the admit rate is super low from their school.

Tulane and UMiami are easier admits especially ED rounds.
USC does not have ED, so if your kid really wants it —- acceptance rate is under 10%, it’ll be a big chance they are taking to pass up ED elsewhere.
