Why the heck is there no school on June 4?

Anonymous
School should not end on a Monday - they should have shortened Thanksgiving or Winter break.

This is comical. Are you a DCPS grad?

DCPS does not close for any religious holidays except widely celebrated Christian ones.

But strangely puts them all on the calendar. No idea why, except to show that yes we do have school on those days.

It's Tiananmen Square Memorial Day. A day to celebrate our democratic freedoms by voting and letting our children loose of government control.

The real question is what is March 15?

It's Election Day, as others have noted, but I think it's weird you don't realize that Eid generally coincides with Easter/Passover, Yom Kippur is always in the fall, and Diwali is generally in November/December. Also DCPS doesn't declare district-wide holidays for religious celebrations except to schedule winter break to coincide with Christmas (and sometimes Hanukkah) and there is always a long weekend that coincides with Easter (and sort of Passover).

There is NOT always a long weekend that coincides with Easter. Like this year, school is open on Good Friday and Easter Monday.

The REAL QUESTION IS - when you change the calendar - why don't you make a big deal of it and spam everyone one that there is a change?

I have a calendar printed out and it does not have June 4th as a day off.

YES! Like changing the last day of school and the first day of school in the middle of the year!

Ackshually Eid moves up 11 days every year. It will be around New Years in 2033.

No one is going to school on that last Monday.

My kids are! (But I predict they eliminate it if there are no snow days.)

They put them on the calendar because they are excused absence for the students for whom they are relevant.

DCPS parents will always complain.
Stay classy!

The snow days are June 20th and 21st!
If you really want to address academics - put more teaching days when kids are in a position to learn.

1 - Remove the Wed before Thanksgiving as a holiday. When you have a 2 day week nothing happens Mon or Tues. Making it a 3 day week is a statement that instruction will happen that week.
2 - Have school go until Dec 22nd. Having a full week of instruction before winter break will support the kids who most need it.
3 - Move the October PD day from the 20th to the 31st. This way you do not need to waste a day of the students doing Halloween parties. Kids can do that at home.
4- get rid of the ides of March holiday - and provide instruction 4 days that week.
