Heard it used on Clean House with Niecy Nash. We use it around the home to describe the kids room when it has officially crossed the line from a little messy to one hot mess.

Precisely. It is synonymous with 'steaming pile.'

I use it whenever my friends get drunk and act ridiculous. It's slightly a term of endearment and also a warning to lock it up.

You know Kim Richards, of Real Housewives of Beverly Hills? She is a hot mess.

Don't think it has to do with attractiveness. And Britney is not a hot mess anymore...she used to be though!

How does it differ from Chocolate Mess? I always wonder if that's a slightly racist thing to say . . . .though I think it has to do with the old M&M commercials -- I'm dating myself here -- which pitched M&Ms as the chocolate candy that didn't make a chocolate mess.

It can refer to a person or a situation, I think particularly a social situation. But it's a very versatile term that's instantly effective, whether you're picturing a boiled over pot of stew or the hot mess in your DD's diaper, so you can apply it to pretty much anything.

Janelle on Teen Mom 2 is a hot mess.

Being a hot mess is NOT attractive or a compliment. I hope nobody has actually taken that as a compliment because there's nothing good about being a hot mess.

New way of saying "train wreck" except that the train is especially attractive?

It's not southern slang.

People in the south have been using the term "mess", without the "hot" for generations.
Ex:"She is SUCH a MESS. Bless her heart." Usually said while shaking head. Is used with affection for small children and people you love who just don't have their stuff together. Can refer to appearance (as in a child with a dirty face) or behavior (chasing a sister through the house). Not sure what addition of hot means, although when I've heard it used is not a substitute for attractive.

Hot mess= the tacky blonde on Real Housewives of Atlanta who wears wigs all the time

The hot in hot mess has nothing to do with attractiveness. It is just for emphasis on the mess.
