Question about FCPS's NNAT2 Test Results

Anonymous
Hi,

My son is the first grader in elementary school in FCPS. He took NNAT2 test in October, 2010 and I got his results last week. He got a Naglieri ability index score: 132. And got 98% percentile rank. I'm happy with the results except for one data which I am not sure. On the results data sheet, there is a NNAT2 level and it shows "B". I'm not sure what this "B" stands for. Based on the score my son got, the chart shows he is extremely superior while this level shows "B" which is not that good. I'm a little bit confused...

Is there any other understanding/interpretation for the NNAT2 level, specifically for this "B"? What does it mean?

What other test is he expecting for him to be qualified in GT in the future? When will be the other tests?

Thanks!

"B" means level b....kg kids take leval a, second grade takes c and it goes on...level B does not mean your kid is rated B
he is in the 98 percentile and has done great!! congrats..

Thanks for the quick reply for clarification!

Is there any other test he should be expecting to be qualified for GT in the future? My son and I didn't even know there was a test and he was lucky to get a good score. But if there will be academic test in the future, I'd like him to be well prepared.

Thanks!

The tests they use to qualify for GT are not "academic" or achievement tests that measure how much a child knows. They are ability tests that are designed to show a child's ability for higher level thinking. Although some people try to prep their children for these tests, it is really not effective. As long as your child is well rested and ready to do his best, I am sure he will be just fine.

Your son will take the CoGat test in the second grade.
Everything you need to know is on the Fairfax County School Board website. Look under AAP for Advanced Academics Program. Fairfax Country doesn't use the term GT any more.

Your son did great on his NNATs!

Well prepared is also being well prepared emotionally. I know of children who were tutored and prepped to death to take the CoGats, and didn't make the AAP pool because the poor kids choked on the pressure.

I completely agree.

Don't tell the kid that it has anything to do with GT or "how smart they are" or "if they are gifted or not"
Don't mention the GT program or trying to "get in" or any of that mess. All they need to know is that they are taking a test to see "how they think."
Most importantly **don't tell the kids the results, or that you even have the results**

There were some kids in my dd's 2nd grade class a few years ago that were bragging about their scores to the other kids and saying how they were going to the GT center before they recieved the decisions in the mail...those 2 kids are still at the base school

We chose not to tell our daughter about any of it, as I wasn't sure whether we would want her to go to the center or stay at the base school when the decisions came in and I wanted to decide what I would prefer before I let her in on the options. Ultimately I let her choose. After agonizing for 2 weeks she chose the center and couldn't be happier.

We did tell our dd that she made it into the pool. She saw her mom jumping up and down and and hugging her father...so she asked!

We carefully explained the situation--that she was in the pool of candidates and they still had to look at other things before they let us know for sure.

After we explained everything, dd shrugged and asked to watch TV. We've had no issues from dd since. Waiting for our letter in April for our next steps.
