Smart Tag OR EZ Pass

Anonymous
For those of you who had both in the past - which one did you stick with?

I am in the process of cleaning things up and want to get rid of 1.

EZ Pass is used up and down the east cost. Smart Tag isn't.

I thought the Smart Tags were rebranded as EZ Pass. The Old Smart Tags definitely work "like" an EzPass and are accepted up and down the East Coast.

Is there a financial advantage to one overthe other? Eg: Smart Tag charges an annual fee?

This was also my understanding.

Aren't they the same thing now?

If you use EZ Pass, check out the Wikipedia page on EZ Pass. It shows how different states charge wildly different amounts to sign up. Some states require substantial deposits and monthly fees, but many others (Peace Bridge & Massachusetts for example) are much more reasonable.

There is a financial difference as to which state you get your EZ pass from. The states all have their own fees and minimums, etc. I'm not sure if you can get an EZ pass from a state that is different from the one you live in, but it might be worth checking around.

You definitely can get an EZ Pass from many states where you do not live. I've had two now. I think some states will offer extra discounts if your are an in-state resident, or for particular in-state roads, so it might be worth checking around if you have particular routes you drive often. I think Massachusetts for example might give some special discount for in-state EZ Pass holders using the Mass Turnpike, or something like that. And I suppose these could be some particular states that will not permit out-of-state sign-ups, but I have not seen them. The two I mentioned (Peace Bridge and Mass) definitely permitted out-of-state applications when I last checked a couple years ago. Whatever you do, skip Maryland, since they imposed an additional monthly fee for all users, regardless of whether you use the pass or not.

Check out New Jersey - I've heard they have the lowest fees.
