Housekeeping Mom Tips

So here and there on posts I've picked up some interesting tips - like, putting a spoonful of coffee in my diaper trash to keep it from smelling longer - and they've been great!

I'm wondering if other people have tips that we can have on one thread. I'm not the best house keeper, so you've got my one

Strategically placed bins are my best friend. When I need to tidy up in a hurry I toss everything in a bin and sort it out when I have the time.

I also run a lemon in the garbage disposal occasionally to keep it from smelling gross.

Ooh! I didn't know that about coffee! I'll have to try that.

I've heard that running lemon Kool Aid in your empty dishwasher helps to keep it clean. I haven't tried it myself, but read good things about it.

I do bleach! Lemon might be better for my pipes though....

For dishwasher, I read that you put a 1/2 a bottle of vinager in the bottom and let it sit. After an hour run the dishwasher on regular cycle and its clean!

I do this and put the bowl of vinegar on my kitchen counter when we've had fish or anything stinky. Works great!

Maybe more of an organizing tip than cleaning, but when I fold sheets I fold them and use one of the pillowcases as a bag. Never hunting down a set of sheets again.

Wonder if this will work for the washing machine as well? Anyone tried?

Yes! Run a hot cycle with 2 cups vinegar. Deodorizes and cleans like a charm!

(If you have an old-fashioned upright and not front-load, you'll still need to wipe inside near the top a little).

I keep a container of baby wipes on the kid's sink and tell them to wipe down after brushing. And they actually do it!

I use a cup of vinegar in every wash. Keeps out urine/vomit smells as well as cleans the washer.

Vinegar's great for mildewy towels or sheets, too. Run them on as hot a cycle as you can with just a cup of vinegar. Then run them as normal and dry. The odor will be GONE.

If I knew you, I would kiss you.

Maybe we should change the thread to 101 uses for vinegar?

1) Remember you don't need fancy supplies to clean - if you have water and paper towels you can clean

2) To keep lysol wipes in the bathroom so I can clean while the kids bath

3) When DH is out and there are piled up dishes, we use paper plates

4) Set wet cloth on "set dirt" for ten minutes - then you don't need to scrub

5) run the dishwasher every night even if it's only 2/3 full

6) If I don't feel like cleaning at all, I set myself a small goal - like picking up 10 things or clenaing for 5 minutes and hope I get hooked

7) Get DCs to clean up every day so its not a battle and shock to them when I ask
