Private Rooms at Sibley?

Anonymous
Does anyone know how this works? Is it first come first served, or do you reserve in advance somehow? Also, how likely you are to get a private room there if you want one? Thanks!

There was a very LONG thread about this recently on the old site. But to answer your question-- Getting a private room at Sibley is first come, first served. You get on the "list" (so to speak) right after you deliver. There is no way to reserve in advance. And to answer another question that usually comes up related to this, your insurance will likely not cover the cost of the private room. We had to foot the bill for the extra portion which after 4 nights (C-section) came to something like $600-700 (this was in Aug. 2006).

As for how likely you are to get a private room, everyone seems to have had vastly different experiences with this. I personally got one right away, and so did a few others I know. I know one person who had to share the first night, but got her own room by the 2nd day. I was really worried about the possibility of having to share, and I'll admit it would have really stunk and I'm so glad I didn't have to deal with it, but ultimately just realize there is nothing you can do about it so what's the point of stressing?

My doctor said (correctly) that it really all depended on the day. Thursday/Friday deliveries are packed (because of inductions, so that the husbands can have the weekend to spend there), so it's definitely a competition, but Saturday/Sundays are easy. I delivered on Sunday and scored the VIP room (pure luck, it opened up as I was delivering), which was AWESOME.

I thought that it was absolutely worth the expense, especially if you're a C and are in there for a few extra days. My own mother was on my nerves enough, never mind someone else's!

Ain't necessarily so about weekends being empty -- I delivered on a Saturday morning and had to share till that evening, when I got to switch into a private room. I would guess that was because I gave birth at the end of August, a relatively common time to have babies!
