Stomach bug going around - how long does the diarrhea last?

Anonymous
Can any of my fellow sufferers give a prognosis? Preschooler DC had a bad cold almost 2 weeks ago, lasted a week. Very congested, pain in one ear that seems to have gone away. He vomited once at night a few different nights, then developed diarrhea about 8 days ago. No appetite, but no fever. Older DC have come down with one day of vomitting, no diarrhea. They complained of a feeling of abdominal pain or pressure. I have been very nauseous for 2 days, like bad morning sickness. We are all washing our hands like fiends, so far DH and one DC are unscathed. The advice nurse at the peds said that there is a virus going around. Poor little DC, our original disease vector has lost over 5 lbs on a 35 lb frame. We've cancelled a lot of plans and are really pushing the brat diet. Any idea when this might end? The older kids are dying to have friends over but I don't want to take a chance getting people sick right before the holidays. Thinking we may not be travelling after all. Anyone hold out any hope?

Yikes, that sounds rough! I had visited DC and then went back home (overseas) and got the stomach bug shortly after returning. I isolated myself for three days...so far noone else has gotten sick but it was 2 solid days of diarrhea and one episode of really violent vomiting followed by low grade fever for one night. Appetite did not come back until three/ four days after I was done with diarrhea. It was really hard to stay hydrated.
Good luck OP hope everyone is feeling better soon!

I had it and DH had it. DC was spared. It lasted terribly for 30 hours and then got 75% better the next 12 hours. Was pretty much fine after that. The vomiting was craaazy.

DD - 1 week of diahrehea, then 1 morning of vomiting and fine the next day.
Me - going on week 2 of diahrehea, vomited twice, two days apart.
DS - severe vomiting 1 day, horrible stomach pains that day and 2 days of diahrehea.
DH- on day 4 of diahrehea, no vomiting.

by diahrehea, I mean liquid and uncontrollable (and I know I cant spell it). Its nasty and HIGHLY contagious (obviously).

OP here. I know just what you mean. Everyone has diarrhea as of today and one kid vomitted after being fine for a few days. Ugh. Guess we'll be staying in town. The kids also seem to have cold symptoms again, stuffy noses. Guess I'll be ordering ginger ale and kleenex from Peapod.

Diarrhea lasted right around a week for my 3.5 year old. It was absolutely uncontrollable. I ended up putting him in Pull Ups because they at least somewhat contained the mess. Several middle of the night baths were needed. Even after the diarrhea stopped, things were still very loose for another week or so. DH seems to have a mild version, with cramping and diarrhea for several days now

For our family, it really varied.

DD #2 - vomited 3 times and had diarrhea once
me - vomited non-stop for 6 hours and had horrible diarrhea for the next 24 hours
DD #1 - vomited for about 4 hours and had bad diarrhea that night but was fine by morning
DH - vomited and had horrible diarrhea for about 6 hours and got so dehydrated that he passed out and hit his head on the bedroom door.

This is one nasty bug!

We've all had that too. It's awful. The vomiting lasted about a day with the three of us who vomited. The diarrhea lasted about a week, although the worst of it was right at the beginning.

Everybody at preschool seems to have the same thing. It's really icky this year.

Lovely. I woke up with terrible diarrhea last night and was vomiting. Trying to see if I can hold down liquids now.

I'm terrified my 4 month old DS is going to get this. Breastfeeding despite the nausea in hopes it helps. I think I must have picked it up at the mall despite lots of handwashing since that is the only place we've been.

I had my MIL come over because I didn't really feel up to taking care of the baby and I figured she'd jump at the chance. This stinks!

4 out of 5 of us had it this past week. The kids threw up. The adults had diarrhea. Only lasted 24 hours max.

HI, I'm from Central NY and have been fighting this bug for 8 days. Started extremely sudden with vomiting and continued every half hour for 7 hours. Never been through anything like it! Next day the diarreaha started CONTINUALLY for 3 days (how can I possible have anything left in me?) and I'm down 13 pounds, the only good thing to come out of it..lol. It's horrendous and straight from hell! I'm still dragging even after taking afternoon naps. I can't imagine trying to take care of a little one feeling like this.

My preschooler DD got it first; she vomited every 20 minutes for the first 24 hours, when she landed in the ER. She was released 12 hours later, and then only vomited a few more times before the diarrhea started. She had frequent diarrhea for 3 days, but now she's doing a lot better.

I got it next. For the first 12 hours, I was literally just STREAMING vomit and diarrhea out of my body. The retching was so bad I couldn't control the diarrhea. I slept in the bathtub that night. Six days later, the diarrhea is still going strong. I have only thrown up a few times in the past few days, but that's because I'm barely eating.

Literally, if I had cyanide in the house, I would have taken some during those first 12 hours.

So weird - I was going to post the exact same thread title this afternoon but had to get offline before I could do so. I opened the thread to see if it was mine and I had forgotten -- and saw that this is actually a thread someone started in December.

I will still respond. Diarrhea is on day 4 for us and I'm wondering how long this will go on.

my daughter had a similar bug last winter. We got snowed in the same week, and one day I counted that I changed 17 diarrhea diapers. In a single day. She was also barfing. Horrible week.

You might see if you can give your kids a probiotic and switch to a lactose-intolerant formula or milk. That's what we were told to do. Apparently the bug had temporarily made our daughter lactose-intolerant, and continuing to ingest lactose was creating more diarrhea. and the probiotic helped restore the "good bacteria" that had been flushed out of her system.

I'm just getting over mine - about a week now. I found that I felt much better after introducing Dan Active and some probotics ( I have some capsules, I would stick with Dan Active and yogurt for a young child). It may be coincidence, but I do think it helps, especially with the diarrhea.
