Random Acts of Kindness

Could anyone share a random act of kindness they've witnessed or benefited from recently (or not so recently?)

That guy behind you in line - pay for his groceries (assuming the bill isn't too expensive)

A customer in the Home Depot parking lot helped us lift a heavy door on top of our car. Funny thing is about a month later we were at Lowes and we saw another couple struggling like we were. My husband ran up to help them just like the previous guy did to us. What goes around comes around!

A guy who didn't work at the grocery store where I'd shopped helped me carry my bags to the car as I dealt with getting the kids into the car and in their seats. I almost cried with gratitude.

A security guy at the airport far away overseas who told the other guards to lay off me and let me keep my bottles of water as I was 6 mos pregnant, starting my long flights back home.

An older gentleman let me go in front of him in the customer service line at Target, because my baby was getting fussy. He said something like "I'm in no hurry-- but I think she wants her dinner!"

I've done this a time or two as well, before I had a baby, so it was nice to have it come back to me.

My son kicked off his shoe as we were crossing the street. He was in the stroller and I had my 4yr old daughter walking. A man passing on the sidewalk went into the street and retrieved the shoe. When I thanked him, daughter call him "my hero".

The person in front of me on I-95 N paid my $2.00 toll while paying his/hers. It was totally random and put a smile on my face the rest of the ride. I plan to do the same for someone else next time.

When I was in school in Charlottesville, a bunch of us would study together at a coffee shop. We probably purchased three cups of coffee between five of us, and stayed for hours.

A man around 40 who was mentally disabled would stop in every day and buy a cup of coffee, and just people watch. We liked him, even though we couldn't really have much of a conversation with him. One day the owner decided that since the man had finished his coffee, he had to vacate his armchair. He didn't have any money, as his mother only gave him enough for one cup each day when she dropped him off.

A friend of mine got up, went to the counter, and ordered him the fanciest, most time consuming coffee drink to make. He brought it over to the man, who LOVED it. The owner was outraged, but he couldn't kick out a customer with a paid drink!

That was a good day.

Thanks here too- not OP but it made me smile too! I remember the days when I was preggo and people would go running to open my door- or wait like 5 minutes for me to wabble over.. I had a restaurant open up and wait for me to take takeout and offer me water/extra pillows etc.- being pregnant you did tend to see some people go out of their way!

Dh and I were at wegman's and a woman with a kid was having issues putting food and bags in as kid was out of control- this is before our first child- DH went and helped her through everything and the woman was so happy and said thank you- and DH said- I just want to help- hopefully one day someone will help my wife if she's also having issues- we all need help.

Continuing on DH- our neighbors who we really didn't know well then- we just moved in- well the husband who is 80 fell out of a tree (he's DIY guy) and broke ribs, broke his spine, hit his head really hard- was in the hospital for 3 months.. DH went out and started mowing their lawn every two days.. not asking- just did it.. He still goes over and fixes things for them. Recently, our newborn was hospitalized for a week- on ivs etc.. they brought us food, TRIED to mow our lawn (we couldn;t accept that)- called every night- we have some of the most caring neighbors- our oldest runs over to their house every chance to say hi.

was in NYC recently with 10-mo-old DS in a stroller. trying to get down stairs in the subway, when three men came up to me from different directions and offered to help.

an aside -- for some reason, I don't find this same helpfulness in D.C. there have been many times when I'm walking behind someone with my stroller (and I know they see me) approaching a door, and the person leaves the building and doesn't hold the door open for me. just lets it close on the stroller. what??? how can you be so mean?
