New School Board Candidates

Anonymous
There's a lot of dissatisfaction with current members of the Fairfax County school board, and several of the current members supposedly aren't even going to bother to run for re-election next year.

Has anyone heard who might be running to replace people like Liz Bradsher, Tessie Wilson and Stu Gibson? Or for the at-large seats? Do they have platforms or have they pledged not to engage in the same types of shenanigans as the current School Board members?

I have heard that Meghan McLaughlin (with FAIRGRADE) and Liz Griffith (former challenger to Tessie Wilson) may be running for Tessie Wilson's seat. I have also heard that Tessie Wilson's appointee to AAPAC may also be running.

FCPS needs a virtual wholesale replacement next year - maybe one or two keepers. The rest...to the curb.

Maybe we can get some real people with real values and add some decency back...this woman is not it:

I would love to see Liz Bradsher gone. Thanks for posting this!

Has anyone heard who might be running against Jane Strauss, Dranesville District?

Haven't heard. People in other districts who are angry at Liz Bradsher and Stuart Gibson are mad at her as well, but most people in Dranesville either like her or will vote for the incumbent if she runs again.

Most people don't care or even know how she votes on issues that don't relate to their own school boundaries. Keep those busses running. Gibson has astounding moments of non-political integrity considering the impacts on his constituents of decisions made in other parts of the county. Then he reverts. Strauss has done nothing I know of to curb Bradsher/Storck on their facilities rampage. At-large members are useless. Hone would be OK but lost her way on the closure of a neighborhood school.

At least the captain of strategic governance is gone, Phil whatever.

For those on DCUM who are not aware of what is happening, Bradsher wanted a school closed. Bit of a Queen bee attitude. Small old school serving a low density area-Clifton. The funds for renovating that school would be redirected to a high school renovation . The effect of closing the little old elementary school contributed to a massive boundary study with over 10 elementary schools. A single school cannot take in over 350 kids so the dominoes fell. Bradsher has made a career out of building new schools on the old Lorton prison site. Whether they are needed.

Jane Strauss basically does "business as usual" on the School Board. She went along with Gibson when he wanted South Lakes HS redistricted, and she went along with Bradsher when she wanted Clifton ES closed. Prior to that, she got an addition built at Langley HS in her district (Dranesville) that many did not think was really needed. Perhaps these events aren't entirely unrelated.

Having said that, Jane does what most people expect their School Board member to do. She takes care of their schools and shows up at lots of school and community events and says nice things that make people feel good about themselves and their kids. And she had enough horse sense not to write lots of stupid e-mails like Liz Bradsher. It's not transparently obvious that, as in Bradsher's case, she's trying to surround herself with sycophants or do the bidding of a handful of neighbors.

The people who are angry about Clifton ES would like to unseat Strauss and all the other School Board members who voted in favor of closing the school. It will be an uphill battle unless they can publicize a slate of new candidates (who might also end up cutting across party lines). As the PP noted, most people really don't pay much attention to what their school board member does unless it affects them personally, so incumbency generally is a huge advantage.

I would like to see a really good, progressive democrat run for Liz Bradsher's seat, oddly she sold out her own constituency, they eat their young...previous school board member Cathy Belter, would never have done this. This isn't about home values its about school quality and the FCPS "Big Box School mentality" doesnt work.

Here's one announcement for a candidate to replace Stu Gibson:

UPDATED – Democrats may not want Liz Bradsher either
February 02, 2011 | Brian Schoeneman | Comments 19

My friends over at Red NoVA got a pretty good scoop yesterday, when they reported that current Republican endorsed Springfield School Board representative Liz Bradsher had applied for membership in the Fairfax County Democratic Party.

This isn’t surprising to those of us who have been watching Bradsher’s tenure in office, and I noted in an article last year that she had actively disclaimed being a Republican, but when pressured she wouldn’t answer affirmatively that she was a Democrat.

“Maybe,” she said.

Well, looks like she at least made up her mind. Bradsher wants to be a Democrat.

UPDATE: According to Ben Tribbett over at Not Larry Sabato, no vote was taken on her membership last night at the FCDC meeting, with the vote being postponed to the next meeting. Here’s hoping that the Democrats make the right decision and refuse to let Bradsher play them like she played us.

Also according to our friends at RedNoVA, she said at the meeting that she didn’t intend to run for School Board again – which is good, because the chances of her getting reelected are about as good as GW making it to the Final Four this year. RedNoVA also reported that she’d made overtures for running for Board of Supervisors. Good luck. Without support from the Democrats, she’s got nowhere to turn to for support. She has zero chance in beating Pat Herrity in a primary for the Republican nomination and the Democrats are smart enough to not want her either.

What I find telling is the fact that, when the avenue of running as a Republican failed her, she turned to the Democrats. That’s a cynical move, and one that should give any of us pause when looking at those who seek elected office. I’m a strong believer in the two party system and I want my elected officials to choose a side and stay with it. As the old saying goes, you dance with the date who brought you. Those folks who want to run so bad that they’re willing to jump from party to party really need to take a step back and figure out exactly why they’re running – do they want to serve or are they just in it for their own egos?

In Bradsher’s case, I’m pretty sure we all know the answer to that.
