Boosterthon Fun-Run Fundraiser - NOT a fan

Hmm - the Los Angeles Unified School District cancels a Fun Run: http://dixiecanyon.com/2016/02/apex-cancelled-2-12-16/

Reason? Because instructional time is not for fundraising.

Maryland PTA has that in their by-laws as well but the money hungry PTA's and principals don't seem to care about that.

Apex was canceled by LAUSD for breaking CALIFORNIA STATE EDUCATION POLICIES. They are breaking the law by operating in the state of California ANY TIME during Instructional hours. What is considered instructional time? ANY TIME DURING THE SCHOOL DAY!!

It took LAUSD only a few hours to cancel this event when presented with a clear view of what this company has been doing on campus. They sent out an E-mail which reached 100's of educators in the district and warned them about using this or any company like them during school hours.

To the APEX representative here encouraging the parents to view materials about APEX... would you care to share the "curriculum" videos you use to train your employees?? The ones where they are training the children how to do marketing calls? Care to explain why your company uses the term "Training" for the curriculum you provide? You are training the children according to a curriculum correct? At least that is what is says on your videos you use try to market to prospective franchise buyers right? My school district freaked out when it found out APEX was teaching a curriculum.

Why don't you share with us what a day with APEX on campus looks like. Especially the part where your company uses P.E. classes as an opportunity to include the children who have been left out. In the letter our school received explaining how a day would look, including children in the P.E. class was a way to make them feel included. This might be the most disturbing thing I have heard from this company. They knowingly make the children feel "left out" and they have parts of the program to make up for it. I also hate the fact that they use a class the children should all be included in anyway as some sort of way to include the children where otherwise left out.

And while they justify how much money it takes to run the program, because they have to pay their employees and pay for supplies, the franchise owners are walking away with Millions of dollars.

And.... according to California Education Code 51520, For-profit companies can NEVER get permission to fund raise on campus during school hours.

51520. (a) During school hours, and within one hour before the time
of opening and within one hour after the time of closing of school,
pupils of the public school shall not be solicited on school premises
by teachers or others to subscribe or contribute to the funds of, to
become members of, or to work for, any organization not directly
under the control of the school authorities, unless the organization
is a nonpartisan, charitable organization organized for charitable
purposes by an act of Congress or under the laws of the state, the
purpose of the solicitation is nonpartisan and charitable, and the
solicitation has been approved by the county board of education or by
the governing board of the school district in which the school is
located.

Apex is fully aware of the laws they are breaking in the State of California.

dixiecanyon.com took down that web page, but the wayback machine still has it:

Separately...

Booster let slip the password they use to access our children's fundraising activities.
"Hacking Equifax, Target and Uber undoubtedly took a great deal of time and talent.

"But Booster Enterprises made it easy. They put the password to their fundraising database - which holds information about children and their contributors - into a video which was found on their Google+ account (now deleted)."

If Boosterthon and Apex disappeared tomorrow, and their promoters were imprisoned, the world would be a better place, and the children in every school affected would be better off. It is sad to see the state of parent participation where a school's major fundraiser is taken over by corporate greedhead scammers. In these cases, the school's volunteer community is alienated and shattered, parent participation declines, and school spirit dies. This is exactly what fun run scams like Boosterthon and Apex Fun Run do to schools, and the scams turn the schools into dependent wards of outsourced fundraising. It takes forever to rebuild a sense of community and volunteer bases after a school surrenders to a fun run. Fun run scams are extraordinarily destructive to school communities, they steal half the money, they disable volunteer systems. Do not ever allow anyone from a fun run like Boosterthon or Apex into your school.

I think you are being a little dramatic! They are for profit companies. The PTAs are aware of this.

We are very aware that they are for profit companies, but found out to late that the Apex Fun Run was all about profits--and only their own! Pardon me for being so dramatic, but they sucked all the juice out of the oranges at our school, and the scammers fled with over $50,000 in pure profits taken from our families. That is $50,000 taken from our kids that could have gone to enrichment programs and equipment like musical instruments or something like that.

Yes, the PTA's might be aware, but the PTA at our elementary school has NOT disclosed that they will be handing over half of the money collected to this company. Nor have they disclosed that they are paying that up front fee. All they did was put a dollar amount in their budget as their total income from this fundraiser, so while you say that the PTA's know, not all of them are disclosing it to their
members.

NO! Boosterthon has taken of 1 million is profits from us over the last 2 years in total we raised 1m 50,789 dollars in 2 years!! so stop. They Scam.

I have experienced it and if you look at the numbers, it is actually a benefit. A yankee candle sale will not raise $20K or more for your school. They do. But if you can get those numbers without them then I say go for it. The best option is to go through PTA

Last year, as a student. in 3rd grade, their presentation said specifically, $7 for an invisible ink pen. So, my mom donated $7 dollars so I could get the pen. and all I got was some stupid glow-in-the-dark bracelet and they said you had to donate 30 dollars just for the first prize! Thankfully we got our refund but still, kids are still falling for this stupid scam.
