It will depend on the school.

Why are you bumping the message without giving further detail about which school you're looking for? It depends on the school, but they are all going to be relatively casual welcoming events. Are you wondering if it's black-tie? They are typically parents breakfast/coffee receptions.

This is ridiculous.

Parent receptions are typically very formal events. You want to wear you best clothing. A digital camera to record the special moment is always a smart idea, as well as turning off your cell phone.

Many schools in the area like to have parents get into break out groups. They play games for an ice-breaker and then each parent gets up and talks about their child and what they like about the school. You and your spouse should decide beforehand who is going to do this. Parents/familes typically look better if you can speak well.

You shake a few hands, exchange calling cards (do you have those?), and then you leave.

Hope this helps.

My favorite game is the one where the parents have to sort themselves into a line, with the richest in the front and the poorest at the end, without talking to each other.

Yeah, that's a good one. Did your school stop the music and then have all the parents sort themselves by their children's WPPSI scores? I think everyone really relaxes with that one.

No, but they used them to organize the seating at lunch so the parents with 99th percentile kids would mix with the others, instead of just sticking to their own kind. I thought it was a nice touch that really underlined the school's commitment to diversity.

Hee hee. Glad to see this forum getting a sense of humor!
