DC Public and Public Charter Schools

I pulled this from the thread on professors' kids because I thought everyone should see it. I had no idea others talk of Wilson this way, because that's not what you do in enlightened company.
IME, it's spot on. We're thinking of sending DCs to Wilson in a few years and shooting for Yale, in case that part's not obvious |
| really? others talk of Wilson this way? link please. |
| It's been discussed many times on this board about Wilson having one group of kids on the path to success and many others who are not. And of course you can guess how this breaks down racially. Yale or jail captures this sentiment. |
| Folks have described Wilson this way for years. The first time I heard it was several years ago from a Washington local who'd attended private schools in the area. It's not P.C. but it underscores the dichotomy. |
|
OP,
You should check out Wilson's college placement. |

Essentially Wilson practices de facto desegregation with the white kids disproportionately represented in certain academies. Remember, Reiner the teacher that was dumped and then re-hired at Wilson. read everything he wrote. He didn't want to deal with certain groups of students and an overwhelming majority, if not all, of the parents and students that supported him were white. His classes didn't look like Wilson. Was he a good teacher? Hell no, but the "Yale" crowd, liberal though they be, didn't want their kids taught by anyone who wasn't white. If Wilson lost those kids it would've been SOL.
And now you know the rest of the story. |
I'm so glad that you made this clear! Though I'm really surprised to hear it, I confess... |
That's complete BS - If you want to avoid black kids in your class or being taught be black teachers, don't send your kids to Wilson. The Yale crowd at Wilson wants their kids to have a well rounded educational experience and doesn't care about the color of the the teacher as long as he or she is good - and Reiner is - or the parents and kids wouldn't have clamored to get him back. |
Does anyone have a link to the actual list of school the Wilson grads got into over the last few years? I am in free fall anxiety about this . |

| I got this off the school website last year, I haven't seen the Class of 2009's posted. |
This is so depressing AA Tenleytown homeowner parent of future Wilson student.here. My kid is bright, probably could make the top 20-15% . But not if there is an embittered white teacher blocking his path thinking a white kid should get the nod because they remind him of his niece or nephew or whatever. My god, this beyond scary. I wasn't expecting Yale but something decent-Williams, Trinity, Bowdoin, Tufts something like that. Gah. |
Wow! This is literally not half bad. Hah. So much for the rumors. I can see some of the racial breakdown along HBCU's --it;s a reasonable showing among better private and state schools. What a dope you be to stuggle with 30k a year at top three--their results when sorted for racial preference of some AA's for HBCU's are not significantly better--at least not to justify the strain paying that much tuition would put on our family of 5. Thank you. Thank you.

I don't know whether this will be more or less depressing for you, but the Reiner story is more complicated, especially when you look at the similar treatment of Siebens and Martel. All three have been highly successful AP teachers, all three are older white guys who have strong personalities. I've heard at least three versions of the story -- one is that they're threatening to the new principal who is eager to see them gone; another is that the new principal (pace Jay Matthews) wants more kids in AP, regardless of whether the kids themselves want to take AP, and these teachers don't want either to water down their classes or to try to teach a room full of kids where half want to be there and half don't; the last is a variation on the post you quoted which is the claim that the achievement gap is so great at Wilson because AP is pitched too high and too narrowly and that needs to be addressed. Bottom line, unless your DC is already in MS, it's going to be wait-and-see. All of these guys are old enough that they'd have been gone soon anyway, so your DC wouldn't have been affected. At which point the question becomes what/who replaces them and their AP classes. Does the gap get narrowed by lowering the top, expanding the top, raising the bottom, or does it just persist? My guess is some of each and then the question becomes can you live with it and where will your kid end up. Keep an eye on Walls as an option, though there are some indications that it's facing some of the issues. Much may depend on the new Chancellor and/or the principals. |
