Glider? Worth it?

Anonymous
We are expecting #4 in a few weeks - I never have had a glider, but we're in a new house without any extra room for a nursery and I think having something in our room where I can nurse will be a good move (as opposed to having to walk down a flight of stairs). Are gliders worth it? If so, any particular brands? Thanks so much!

I think it's worth it. It's a nice place to sit w/ baby to nurse, give bottle or just to glide. I'm glad we decided to get one.

Loved my Dutalier--got it on sale at Babies to Teens in Manassas. You may want to have a small pillow for your back, but I'm someone who always cranks the lumbar support in my car all the way.

I still rock my 3-year-old many nights, we sit and talk before bed and it's so nice. And in the middle of the night, it helps pass the time when you're rocking (and paperback books you can read with one hand will keep you from falling asleep!)

Also, definitely get a nursing stool, so much better for your body alignment to have your feet up that little bit.

Absolutely! I didn't use mine at much at first, I preferred a big, comfy recliner at the beginning when the nursing was constant. But from 6-12 mos I have used it a ton, mostly when my DD wakes up from teething and needs to be comforted. It's been a must for me.

There was post on this topic already. It was on the old website so I am not sure if was migrated to the new site, but you can check.

I like our glider, but I also frequently use the living room couch and recliner in there. Since we have it, we use it, but I would probably re-think it in hindsight and use the money for other things.

I haven't had my baby yet, but from talking to friends, most seem to recommend some sort of comfortable chair that rocks.

My one friend strongly recommended a rocking recliner that you could continue to use after pregnancy. Like a Lazy-Boy type recliner. She loved hers because she could rock her son to sleep, then fall asleep herself in the chair without having to disturb him.

That's probably what we'll end up doing, instead of buying a glider.

gliders are seriously a waste of money whenyou can get a recliner for less and use it more often down the line. Plus, after trying out gliders, I just found that the lazy-boy type recliners were just more comfy. Good luck!

I bought an upholstered vintage rocking chair from a thrift store for $50, and I love it. I personally thought the gliders at places llike Babies R Us were ugly and overpriced. Couldn't get myself to spend yet more money on something I wouldn't want to keep in the house for the long term.
